can be used to indicate that the command was accepted and the user-process may now pay attention to the data connections, for implementations where simultaneous monitoring is difficult. The server-FTP process may ftp error 500 send at most, one 1xx reply per command. 2xx Positive Completion reply The requested action has been successfully completed. A new request may be initiated. 3xx Positive Intermediate reply The command has been accepted, but the requested action is being held in abeyance, pending receipt of further information. The user should send another command specifying this information. This reply is used in command sequence groups. ftp error 421 4xx Transient Negative Completion reply The command was not accepted and the requested action did not take place, but the error condition is temporary and the action may be requested again. The user should return to the beginning of the command sequence, if any. It is difficult to assign a meaning to "transient", particularly when two distinct sites (Server- and User-processes) have to agree on the interpretation. Each reply in the 4xx category might have a slightly different time value, but the intent is that the user-process is encouraged to try again. A rule of thumb in determining if a reply fits into the 4xx or the 5xx (Permanent Negative) category is that replies are 4xx if the commands can be repeated without any change in command form or in properties of the User or Server (e.g., the command is spelled the same with the same arguments used; the user does not change his file access or user name; the server does not put up a new implementation.) 5xx Permanent Negative Completion reply The command was not accepted and the requested action did not take place. The User-process is discouraged from repe

to the FTP specification STD 9, RFC 959, "FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (FTP)" (October 1985). These extensions provide strong authentication, integrity, and confidentiality on both the control and data channels with the introduction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FTP_server_return_codes of new optional commands, replies, and file transfer encodings. The following new optional commands are introduced in this specification: AUTH (Authentication/Security Mechanism), ADAT (Authentication/Security Data), PROT (Data Channel Protection Level), PBSZ (Protection Buffer Size), CCC (Clear Command Channel), MIC (Integrity Protected Command), CONF (Confidentiality Protected Command), and ENC (Privacy Protected Command). A new class of reply types (6yz) is also introduced for protected replies. None https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2228 of the above commands are required to be implemented, but interdependencies exist. These dependencies are documented with the commands. Note that this specification is compatible with STD 9, RFC 959. Horowitz & Lunt Standards Track [Page 1] RFC 2228 FTP Security Extensions October 1997 1. Introduction The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) currently defined in STD 9, RFC 959 and in place on the Internet uses usernames and passwords passed in cleartext to authenticate clients to servers (via the USER and PASS commands). Except for services such as "anonymous" FTP archives, this represents a security risk whereby passwords can be stolen through monitoring of local and wide-area networks. This either aids potential attackers through password exposure and/or limits accessibility of files by FTP servers who cannot or will not accept the inherent security risks. Aside from the problem of authenticating users in a secure manner, there is also the problem of authenticating servers, protecting sensitive data and/or verifying its integrity. An attacker may be able to access valuable or sensitive data merely by monitoring a network, or through active means may be able to delete or modify the data being transferred so as to c

Did you get any errors when you restart proftpd or try to connect with TLS?Click to expand... I thought the certs were already created. No errs on restarting proftpd, but when trying to FTP using TLS I get the following error: Code: AUTH TLS 500 AUTH not understood SER user 331 Password required for user. PASS ********** 230 User user logged in. heftigrat, Jan 18, 2006 #3 heftigrat New Member Well, I can finally connect. I had the wrong setting in my FTP client (changed from "AUTH TLS" to "SSH/FTPS". However, the user is not in a '~' jail. How do I fix this? EDIT: Ah, it's just like an ssh session. Whoops! So I still need TLS to work, which it doesn't currently. Well, that would do it, but I figured out I was connecting over an SSH tunnel. "DefaultRoot ~" is in "/etc/proftpd_ispconfig.conf", which is included in "/etc/proftpd.conf". I still can't connect with TLS though. heftigrat, Jan 18, 2006 #6 till Super Moderator Staff Member ISPConfig Developer Does you proftpd.conf contain these liens: Code: TLSEngine on TLSLog /var/log/tls.log TLSProtocol SSLv23 TLSOptions NoCertRequest TLSRSACertificateFile /etc/ssl/certs/proftpd.cert.pem TLSRSACertificateKeyFile /etc/ssl/certs/proftpd.key.pem TLSVerifyClient off The lines may vary a bit, depending on your linux distribution. till, Jan 19, 2006 #7 heftigrat New Member Nope, it certainly did not. I added those lines but I need to create the ".pem" files (I already did a "locate *.pem" and got nothing). Is there a method I should follow
