Ftp Error 200 Type Is Now Ascii
2011 by Dan Dawson As usual, this blog is more a notepad of sorts to remind me of things if I need them again in the future. And it's always a good thing to post them publicly in case others experience the same problem. I use Cyberduck on the Mac for FTP and love it, but when I added a new FTP server to it on one of my computers today, and attempted to log in, I kept receiving the following error: FTP Error: 200 TYPE is now ASCII I searched around for a while and never did find the solution for the cause, tried all kinds of things (Switching from Default to Active or Passive FTP mode, trying different encodings, deleting my bookmark and rebuilding it, etc.) and nothing worked. Then I finally figured out the problem! I had copied and pasted the password out of my password file, and when I selected it I accidentally included the line break at the end of the password. So what was being entered in the password field was the password plus a line break. Simply re-entering the password without the extra line break fixed the problem. In order to have Cyberduck ask me for the password so I could correct the error, I simply had to load up "Keychain Access" and delete the stored copy of the password. Clicked my bookmark again, entered the correct password, and I was in! Hope that helps you if you had the same problem! This entry was posted in Apple by Dan Dawson. Bookmark the permalink. I'm using http://ki6esh.com/2011/11/11/ftp-error-200-type-is-now-ascii-solution/ the Web Proxy client, and if i visit a website it says: 200 TYPE is now ASCII 500 I won't open a connection to 10.10.2.16 (only to 81.183.210.XXX) or: 200 Switching to ASCII mode. 500 Illegal PORT command. The TMG is configured with one network adapter, and it is located behind a linux NAT router/firewall. Clients are on the same subnet as the TMG (10.10.2.0/24) and the http://forums.isaserver.org/%5BSolved%5D_FTP_over_HTTP_problem/m_2002104664/tm.htm outside adress is 81.183.210.XXX. If i try using ftp without proxy from a client, i can use both passive and active mode. Any ideas? < Message edited by mcdouglas -- 9.Nov.2010 4:57:19 AM > Post #: 1 Featured Links* RE: FTP over HTTP problem - 8.Nov.2010 4:33:25 AM Jason Jones Posts: 4663 Joined: 30.Jul.2002 From: United Kingdom Status: offline Have a look through this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb794745.aspx Cheers JJ _____________________________Jason Jones | Forefront MVP | Silversands Ltd My Blogs: http://blog.msedge.org.uk/ and http://blog.msfirewall.org.uk/ (in reply to mcdouglas) Post #: 2 RE: FTP over HTTP problem - 8.Nov.2010 4:38:52 AM mcdouglas Posts: 7 Joined: 5.Nov.2010 Status: offline Thank you for the link, but unfortunately I already went through it. None of the solutions helped. An interesting thing: In the error message i see PORT command. Why does TMG use PORT when by default it should be using PASV mode? (IE is set to passive) (in reply to Jason Jones) Post #: 3 RE: FTP over HTTP problem - 8.Nov.2010 5:41:50 AM robpomeroy Posts: 34 Joined: 19.Mar.2010 Status: offline Have you tried: Logging the transaction from this IP address and seeing what TMG's doing?Installing the TMG client? ___________________

It's taken me about 2 hours to upload some relatively small galleries - it will do ftp error between 5 and 20 files and I then get the above error message. Additionally, a particular html file would not upload at all - I tried about 5 times, each time being told that the file had been uploaded successfully (not that it hadn't been necessary to upload). Looked at 'Site Maintenance' - wasn't there. Tried to upload the file through Filezilla, uploaded first time. I've spoken to my webhost to try to ftp error 200 determine why this was happening, but let's say I didn't have much success, and have also done a web search from which I gleaned that some who are affected by this error have discovered that a file is being deleted on upload (I thought it was a 'permission' thing, but that's about as far as my knowledge in that area extends!). Does anyone know how to resolve this issue, please, as it's too time-consuming for words at the moment! Normally the 200 series means the requested action has been successfully completed, its the set to I which i havent come across before, i've seen the set to A mode which ended up being a passive mode port configuration issue, but leave it with me half an hour or so and I'll liase with my networking guy who may have a better answer than me (that's unless someone else beats me to it in the meantime) Hope This Helps ;-)
