My best guess is that you are trying to access a folder that does not exist, and rather than responding with the correct FTP code (550), it chooses to return nothing. This empty response confuses the FTP library and thus you get the weird error message. You say that 1.2 is working, so I assume that you have not changed FTP server. That makes me guess that the change happens with .Net
