A new request may be initiated. 3xx Positive Intermediate reply The command has been accepted, but the requested action is being held in abeyance, pending receipt of further information. The user should send another command specifying this information. This reply is used in command sequence groups. 4xx Transient Negative Completion reply ftp error 500 The command was not accepted and the requested action did not take place, but the error condition is temporary and the action may be requested again. The user should return to the beginning of the command sequence, if any. It is difficult to assign a meaning to "transient", particularly when two distinct sites (Server- and User-processes) have to agree on the interpretation. Each reply in the 4xx category might have a slightly different time value, but the intent is that the user-process is encouraged to try again. A rule of thumb in determining if a reply fits into the 4xx or the 5xx (Permanent Negative) category is that replies are 4xx if the commands can be repeated without any change in command form or in properties of the User or Server (e.g., the command is spelled the same with the same arguments used; the user does not change his file access or user name; the server does not put up a new implementation.) 5xx Permanent Negative Completion reply The command was not accepted and the requested action did not take place. The User-process is discouraged from repeating the exact request (in the same sequence). Even some "permanent" erro

I establish a connection and get a return code of 220 with the following message: "220 servername FTP server ready." So the i try to login by sending the send function with the following buffer in the second parameter "user username\r\n" and it returns without any errors but when i try to read the server reply by calling the recv function, i get the same message '220 servername FTP server ready." I can't figure out what's wrong. It's a windows program trying to ftp to a solaris box. I am using the code from a book, sort of old, but since i am not getting any errors i am clueless. I cannot even log in. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. It tells you what the returncodes mean. Take a look at http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc959.html As for 220, it means that you've made connection to an FTP server, and now have to log on. Send the USER and PASS commands to identify and authenticate the user to the FTP server. - -- Lew Pitcher Master Codewright & JOAT-in-training | GPG public key available on request Registered Linux User #112576 (http://counter.li.org/) Slackware - Because I know what I'm doing. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFCiozEagVFX4UWr64RAumHAJ0fhuaXNcF9ChruTyXkrQ SCoFlnbACg36Uy afOOu/fVM/zSA4UpGiB0pAs= =6mhg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Lew Reply With Quote 05-18, 05:28 AM #3 Re: return code 220 from ftp In article <91wie.1776$bellglobal.com>, Lew Pitcher
