error) up vote 0 down vote favorite I want to create a disk image of source 100.03 GB Ext Hard Disk Media on destination 5TB Lacie ST5000DX000-1H2170 there is greater than 1TB remaining on the destination disk. The Disk Utility progress windows displays the message Creating Image Macintosh HD.dmg Reading whole disk (Apple_HFS : 0)… with progress bar that moves up to about 50% before the following error message is displayed: Unable to create Macintosh open error 5 input output error disk utility HD.dmg. (Input/output error). Using Disk Utility, First Aid, Verify Disk, the volume "Macintosh HD" appears to be OK. Is there a way to view any more detail than the console will provide? So that I can learn more about the error. It could be due to low power on the source drive - I am using a 2.5" HDD External enclosure (Mini G2 from Silicon P/L) requires 5VDC/0.5A usb to USB and power (host usb 1 - enclosure usb and enclosure round power split end cable) lead and I am using my MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 as the host USB port. The HD inside the enclosure is from an early model G4 Powerbook that was running Tiger OS X. Other answers to input/output error suggest using DiskWarrior so I tried that, DiskWarrior fixed a bunch of flags and repaired permissions but when I ran disk utility again after that to create a new image it failed again for the same reason: input/output error. Using the terminal command (from http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror, sync does produce an image but after completion it could not be opened (or mounted) due to a "no mountable file system." mac external-hard-drive disk-utility share|improve this question edited Jul 6 '14 at 8:29 Jens Erat 8,800112744 asked Jul 6 '14 at 7:52 Jacob 103113 Sounds like

I do this my making disk images(.iso) from the dvds. To do this I use disk utility > new image > save as dvd/cd master. Started with some Battlestar Galactica. First 6 disks of season 1 went fine. Next http://superuser.com/questions/35677/input-output-error-using-mac-disk-utility 3 disks of season 2 went fine. First disk of season 2.5 I get an input/output error about 75% through the process. Any ideas? mac dvd disk-utility share|improve this question asked Sep 4 '09 at 12:10 CT. 1,454164062 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted I think the issue is with your disk. If you have access to a spin doctor I would suggest that. Since your trying to get it as an iso, MacTheRipper and Handbrake will not do this. You could try http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-copy-mac.html . You could also dd from the comand line. But this may be what disk utility already uses to create cd/dvd master copies. Just google this for syntax. share|improve this answer answered Sep 15 '09 at 12:55 calvin123 262 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote This could be a problem with the drive, or (more likely) a problem with the DVD. Perhaps there's a scratch on it, or maybe just a smudge. It's tough to say. If you copy the files directly, you can still play it with VLC. Also Disk Utility is not your only choice for backing up DVDs. I will point to MactheRipper or Handbrake for

I want to make copies. With the disk utility I clicked "make an image." I chose DVD CD/Master as the format. I have plenty of disk space. The utility poped up a dialog and ground away for a very long time. A progress bar slowly advanced. From a terminal window I could see a large file with a *.cdr extension was growing in my Desktop directory. At the very end input output error a new dialog popped up telling me it was unable to create the disk image due to an input/output error. The *.cdr file (which had been there on the file system and growing as the progress bar got bigger) was suddenly gone. What's the deal?
