I even threw some video DVDs at it to make sure it wasn't the disc. Code: [pickens@acer1 Videos]$ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=POTC.iso dd: reading `/dev/sr0': Input/output error 5088+0 records in 5088+0 records out 2605056 bytes (2.6 MB) copied, 1.67727 s, 1.6 MB/s [pickens@acer1 Videos]$ I am getting the same thing on my laptop running Mandriva, oddly enough. Two different drives, two different computers, two different distros and multiple DVDs. What could be the problem?? __________________ Desktop machine: Zotac MiniITX MB / Pentium Dual Core E2200 (Soon to be Core 2 Duo), 4GB RAM, 640GB SATA, nVidia integrated GPU. Posted by: wickedsteve Date: April 28, 2011 09:23AM I tried to backup my hard drive by making a disc image on an external USB drive. This usually works. But this time I got an "input output error". So I thought maybe the external drive was messed up. I formatted it, erasing my old backup (big mistake) and tried again. I still got an error. So then I tried a different USB drive but still got an error instead of a backup. Then I tried using time machine thinking maybe disk utility was the problem. Time machine could not back up my drive either. It failed and said to try again later. Is my hard drive screwed? I ran the hardware test, first aid and disk warrior. According to my utilities everything is fine but I can not figure how how to back up my hard drive. Two different backup methods did not work and neither did two different drives. Thanks in advance for any help. Options: Reply• Quote Re: I can not backup my hard drive. Posted by: C(-)ris Date: April 28, 2011 09:48AM If you are getting an IO error that is generally bad. It means that the system can't read a portion of the disk. I would backup up all your work immediately. Check the system.log and see if there is anything that says IO error and a disk name or slice number. Generally if you are getting IO errors on a drive it is dying and needs to be replaced.
