Input Output Error Mac Restore
image using disk utility (Input/output error) up vote 0 down vote favorite I want to create a disk image of source 100.03 GB Ext Hard Disk Media on destination 5TB Lacie ST5000DX000-1H2170 there is greater than 1TB remaining on the destination disk. The Disk Utility progress windows displays the message Creating Image Macintosh HD.dmg Reading whole disk (Apple_HFS : 0)… with progress bar that moves up to about 50% before the following error internet recovery mode error message is displayed: Unable to create Macintosh HD.dmg. (Input/output error). Using Disk Utility, First Aid, Verify Disk, the volume "Macintosh HD" appears to be OK. Is there a way to view any more detail than the console will provide? So that I can learn more about the error. It could be due to low power on the source drive - I am using a 2.5" HDD External enclosure (Mini G2 from Silicon P/L) requires 5VDC/0.5A usb to USB and power (host usb 1 - enclosure usb and enclosure round power split end cable) lead and I am using my MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 as the host USB port. The HD inside the enclosure is from an early model G4 Powerbook that was running Tiger OS X. Other answers to input/output error suggest using DiskWarrior so I tried that, DiskWarrior fixed a bunch of flags and repaired permissions but when I ran disk utility again after that to create a new image it failed again for the same reason: input/output error. Using the terminal command (from http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror, sync does produce an image but after completion it could not be opened (or mounted) due to a "no mountable file system." mac external-hard-drive disk-utility share|improve this question edited Jul 6 '14 at 8:29 J

Its sole HDD is a 750GB drive, formatted with Bootcamp. It's still running reasonably well, but in running a defragment pass on it, I've identified that there are a bunch of files which are refusing to be moved by the defragmenter (iDefrag). iDefrag reports a POSIX error code of 5 when accessing the files. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/129030/how-to-identify-and-fix-files-with-corrupted-inaccessible-disk-blocks Picking one at random and trying to copy the file to another location in the shell also reports an error, which makes me think the problem is real and with the disk / FS. Output of cp is: cp: unity_nophysx.nexe: Input/output error Error code 5 is 'access denied' as far as I'm aware, but the defrag process is running as administrator and running cp using sudo on the suspect file makes no difference. Disk Utility, fsck and the Apple Hardware Test all claim the disk is fine. No SMART errors reported, and while there were some permissions errors, they weren't with the files iDefrag is complaining about, and Disk Utility claims to have fixed them without complaint. There are maybe a hundred or more corrupted files, but still a very small fraction of the drive. As far as I can tell, no system files or crucial data are affected. While it would be nice to retrieve the data, I don't mind reinstalling or going to backups. At this point I don't know if it's really the drive dying, just some bad sectors due to the drive being moved while writing, or some other minor corruption that can be worked around. I'm assuming the worst case, and that most likely I'll have to get a slightly larger HDD and clone the existing drive to avoid hav

It input output has been given to me without hard drive in it and I have no clue about what it went through. The laptop works perfectly booting from Ubuntu cd. I have two hard drives to try with, both “Western Digital” and both 160 gb: Hard Drive 1: WD1600BEKT, brand new guaranteed by the ebay seller to be specifically compatible with my MacBook Pro A1150; Hard Drive 2: WD1600BEVT, pretty old. input output error I've installed both drives (one per time obviously) in a Dell Inspiron 1525, installed Ubuntu OS and both drives worked perfectly. Now I install the drives in the MacBook, and every time I do so I call one SMC reset and three PRAM resets. 50% of the times the drive is detected and a faulty Ubuntu OS is loaded. 50% of the times the drive is not seen at all and I get the question mark folder. Same goes when I boot the pc from Ubuntu cd, 50% of the times the hard drive is shown on “Disks” application, 50% it doesn't appear. When “Disks” shows the hard drive, still the hard drive is not really accessible, only one time out of dozens SMART data was available. Time to install Ubuntu, or at least try: 50% of the times the hard drive is not detected and installation cannot be initiated; 50% of the times the hard drive is detected, the installation seems to be started but after few seconds I get “Input/output error during read on /dev/sda” I've replaced the hard drive cable and after that I went through the exact same experiences. I've set the hard drives jumper setting to SSC first, RPS aft

Boot from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Next go to the second screen pull down menu, Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the drive. Then boot from the old drive, download SuperDuper and clone the old drive onto the new one. Here's the download: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S... That failing, boot f
