Input Output Error Mac Disk Utility
PM #1 sw55 View Profile View Forum Posts Member Since Apr 14, 2009 Posts 17 Input / output error when Erasing a disk Hi, I am trying to format a new hard drive. It is an 80 GB USB Samsung drive. I open up Disk Utilitiy, click on Erase, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the volume format, and press [Erase]. After a couple minutes I get the following message: Disk Erase mac restore failure input output error failed with the error Input/output error A similar thing happens when I try to Partition, except the message is Partition failed. This is a new iMac with OS 10.5.6, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB. I haven't used Macs that much, so it's quite possible I'm going about this wrong... How do you format a new USB hard disk? Run Disk Utility. Highlight the line that shows the Samsung disk capacity. 2. Click on erase. 3. Now select format HFS Extended 4. Name the drive if you so desire. 5. Click on erase at the bottom of the screen, then click erase again on the second window. You can partition the drive after the format and erase is completed. Regards. The USB cable has an extra connector on one end for extra power. Plugging that into a second USB port caused the computer to pop

USB drive connected to USB port (front or back) shows up in Disk Utility as an 8GB flash drive. It's a 1TB drive. When I try to format it, I get an "input/output error". When I try to format with terminal, same thing. So I connected the input output drive to my MBP and it registers just fine. This MacPro was just at the Apple Store for a video card replacement. The drive worked fine before this, it was an external backup, part of a three drive rotation. Coincidence? Options: Reply• Quote Re: Input/Output error on USB drive in Mac Pro Posted by: Dick Moore Date: July 26, 2011 01:23PM I'm thinking it is a input output error coincidence -- I've had several I/O issues with external drives connected in every way possible on my hackintosh MacPro 3,1 -- eSATA, USB, Firewire -- and also as an internal drive -- SATA2 and ATA. The drives always test good, but nevertheless, the I/O errors show up. All such drives were "bargain" drives from NewEgg, Computer Geeks, or Surplus Computers. Maybe I'm done buying the cheapest drives out there. More troubling though, was that I bought an open-box 120GB SSD from Other World and it gave the same error during cloning. It formatted fine, and always checked good with Disk Utility. So I think there are other hidden issues here for both of us. I would think that it's a controller problem or even CPU, but I have disks that have been good for dozens of backups that just keep working fine, so it is obviously a disk issue of some kind. But what kind? What it is, man, a low-down and funky feelin' Options: Reply• Quote Newer Topic Older Topic Goto:Forum List • Message List • New Topic • Create A New Profile • Recent Messages • RSS • Log In Sorry, only re
