2005 database from a VB 6 Application. I connect to the database through an ODBC DSN. I renamed the computer on which I'm running the default instance of SQL server from 'Software' to 'IT'. I then ran the sp_dropserver and sp_addserver stored procedures to rename the instance. On restarting the SQL Server service, the server was able to pick up on the new SQL Server name. After configuring the ODBC data source name
Sp_serveroption Data Access
to the new name, the connection was Ok. I'm able to run my application and read records through ADO record sets. However I'm unable to update any recordset using the .Update method. I get the following error instead ... Linked Server ByBlogAdmin 29 December, 2012 11 Comments Once in while I am asked to troubleshoot a SQL Server database where my enable rpc sql server 2012 only connection is though a linked server. Because this database server
Sql Server Rpc
is on protected network, I don’t have port 1433 open to connect the instance with SQL sp_serveroption sql server 2012 Server Management Studio. There are a couple of commands I like to run to check the health of the database. First, already knowing that the database is http://stackoverflow.com/questions/629677/sql-server-not-configured-for-data-access running, I like to look at the error log with the xp_readerrorlog extended stored procedure. When I run a simple command to view the error log from my linked server: exec SERVERNAME1.master.sys.xp_readerrorlog Note: replace SERVERNAME1 with the name of your linked server I get the following error: Msg 7411, Level 16, State 1, Line http://www.thesqlreport.com/?p=120 1 Server ‘SERVERNAME1' is not configured for RPC. This means that when I set up my linked server, I disable RPC commands to and from running for security reasons. To re-enable the RCP commands for the linked server: exec sp_serveroption @server='SERVERNAME1′, @optname='rpc', @optvalue='true' exec sp_serveroption @server='SERVERNAME1′, @optname='rpc out', @optvalue='true' Note: again replace SERVERNAME1 with the name of your linked server --------------------------------------------------------- Once RPC is enabled, there are a couple of other command I like to run to find out the health of the SQL instance & its databases. -- This extended stored procedure displays operating system information regarding local attached disks: exec SERVERNAME1.master.dbo.xp_fixeddrives -- This stored procedure displays the size of the database and how that space is currently allocated. exec SERVERNAME1.mydb.dbo.sp_spaceused -- You can run DBCC CHECKDB and other DBCC commands over a linked server connection: EXEC SERVERNAME1.mydb.dbo.sp_executesql N'DBCC CHECKDB' Note: Again replace SERVERNAME1 with the name of your linked server & mydb with the name of your database -----------------------------------------

2005 Tuesday, March 24, 2009 | Posted by Ritesh Shah I wrote one article to set Linked server at:http://www.sqlhub.com/2009/03/linked-server-in-sql-server-2005-from.htmlSometime you properly set the link server and while trying to execute SELECT statement over it, it may show you following error.Msg 7411, Level 16, State 1, Line 2Server 'LinkToAceess' is not configured for DATA ACCESS.Solution of this error is really pretty much simple. Before we move to solution of error I would like to raise this error. Run the linked server example given in above article and see whether it is working properly. One you done with that let us change one property of Linked Server which will raise above said error.--set data access property to 'false' which will generate error--when you try to execute any SELECT statement against your linked serverexec sp_serveroption [LinkToAceess],'Data Access','false'Now try to execute SELECT statement and greet the error:Msg 7411, Level 16, State 1, Line 2Server 'LinkToAceess' is not configured for DATA ACCESS.Solution is so simple; just enable your data access to linked server with following command.exec sp_serveroption [LinkToAceess],'Data Access','true'Reference: Ritesh Shahhttp://www.sqlhub.comNote: Microsoft Books online is a default reference of all articles but examples and explanations prepared by Ritesh Shah, founder of http://www.SQLHub.com
