Configuration File Is Not Well-formed Xml Visual Studio
User: N/A Description: The worker process for application pool ‘FooAppPool' encountered an error ‘Configuration file is not well-formed XML ‘ trying to read global module configuration data from file ‘\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\FooAppPool\FooAppPool.config', line number ‘3'. Worker process startup aborted. It looks like IIS is continually looking at the applicationhosts.config file in the DFS share. And if a change is made, IIS will load the incomplete configuration file immediately which causes the above error. Though the problem could be resolved by restarting IIS service, customer still prefers a proper solution as IIS access would be interrupted before IIS being restarted. The problem occurred on IIS7, IIS7.5 and IIS8. Root Cause When DFS updates a replicated file, it deletes the original, then drops in the new file. In this setup, there will legitimately be situations where IIS can’t access its config files because they are locked w

This utility traditionally adds a number of configurations to the Location path for the new app in applicationHost.config. We do this programmatically using the Microsoft.Web.Administration configuration classes. This works fine in IIS 7.0 and IIS 7.5, but when we try is not well to install the identical configuration in IIS 8 (Server 2012), we start getting 500.19 server errors for everything hosted on the server because of a supposedly malformed XML element (HRESULT 0x8007000d). I systematically went through all of the configuration we install, and it appears to be the the system.web/httpRuntime maxRequestLength attribute (see below). It appears that the system.web configuration element itself is the culprit, as the error does not disappear until it itself is removed. I've confirmed that the section definition for system.web/httpRuntime states that it is allowed Everywhere, and you can set system.web configuration at other levels of the configuration (e.g., web.config) without issue. Why can't we set it in applicationHost.config?
IIS 7 One day, when my VPC was closed unexpected, the IIS can't restart and throw error: The Windows Process Activation Service encountered an error trying to read configuration data from file ‘\\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config', line number ‘0'. The error message is: ‘Configuration file is not well-formed XML' Luckily IIS makes a backup each time you make a change. All those versions are stored in the folder C:\inetpub\history\. All you have to do is to copy a former applicationHost.config file into the C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\ working directory. Like this:Like Loading...
