Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.I am running IOS 5.1.1 The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again. These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then imap.gmail.com is not responding ipad problem returns)Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestionI am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions. This issue seems not to affect google apps accounts, at least in my

experience, but has affected any "free" gmail accounts I had added to the system mail app. To solve the imap.aol.com is not responding problem: Remove all of your affected accounts from mail. Re-add the accounts, but do not select "Google" from this screen and instead select other. Choose add mail account. Enter your gmail https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4189109?start=60 information including the name that you want your recipients to see. On the following screen, add your information again. You'll also need to add the SMTP and IMAP servers as well as your gmail address and password to additional fields on this screen Choose if you want to sync notes on the next screen That's it! You should be all set with your gmail http://onefinepub.com/2015/08/the-mail-server-imap-gmail-com-is-not-responding-problem-on-ios-with-mail-app/ account added to mail again bypassing the failing Google oauth authentication method. You may also need to enable IMAP on gmail if you have not done so at some point already. It should be noted that using this method will no longer sync your calendar or your contacts. In order to sync those using open protocols and their standard authentication mechanisms rather than using the "Google" account in iOS to sync everything (which uses Oauth2 I believe), you'll need to add your contacts using CardDav and your calendar using CalDav. To fix this and get your contacts and/or calendar syncing on iOS again: Go to Settings. Mail, Contacts, Calendars Add Account Other Add CardDav or Add CalDav On the next screen: Server: google.com User Name: Enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email address. Password: Your Google Account or Google Apps password. Description: Whatever you want to call this account. You're finished! I hope this helps you resolve your gmail issues with iOS' mail app. Share with:TwitterFacebookGoogle Post navigation ← Fix for Chromium Network Location Provider Returning Error Code 403 iPhone 6S $20/month at T-Mobile - Not so Simple →

If you suddenly find yourself getting that "Cannot Get Mail" message from the email app on your iPhone, it can be very frustrating. You know that your iPhone mail app worked just moments ago - and you haven't changed your settings - yet suddenly it seems your settings are being rejected. Here's what to do. Try these in order, as they range from simplest or fastest to less so, although they are all easy.Wait. Sometimes it resolves itself, although if you are like most, you probably won't want to wait very long, and will go on to the next steps.Turn on "Airplane Mode", leave it on for five minutes, and then turn it back off. This will competely disconnect your phone from both the cellular network, and any wifi network, and reset the connection. Yes, it's a minor hassle, but it works.Don't forget that if you have Google's 2-factor authentication set up, you will need to create a new app password for it, your regular Google password won't work. (Forgot how you did that? Read our tutorial on how to set up Google 2-factor authentication for your device here.)We have also heard (but not tested) that sometimes this can be a problem with overzealous security on Google's end, and that after quitting all applications on all devices that may be accessing your Gmail account, you can use your web browser on your iPhone to go to this link:http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptchaThis will take you to this page:Clicking on "Continue" will then allow the device (in this case your iPhone) access to your Google account.SummaryArticle NameFixing the Dreaded iPhone Gmail Description"The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding."
