Yes, this is a known problem, but there is a manual http://www.justanswer.com/computer/2p35h-trying-back-itunes-library-external-hard.html way to get around the issue. The instructions sound much worse than it actually is.Click Start / My Documents / My Music / iTunes/Open the file Itunes Music Library.xml and look the location of the directory you’re moving things from. The first instance of this directory will be that associated with the file iTunes had trouble with. Navigate to this file and shorten its name to something more appropriate. Next, find the song in iTunes, double-click on it, choose “yes” and find the newly renamed file. You can now resume the consolidation process, repeating these steps whenever iTunes has problems. Now start the backup process again, you will need to repeat the above procedure for each path name that is too long. Please let me know if you have any questions.Thank you,Diana Diana and 11 other Computer Specialists are ready to help you Ask your own question now Customer: replied6 years ago. I use eMusic to purchase music. eMusic downloads to one folder, and iTunes manages another. In order to back up my music, I like to consolidate it all into the iTunes folder. iTunes has a feature that does that for you. And it usually works. But today, this is what happened when I tried to consolidate itunes library consolidate my library: Which file? Was it invalid, or was it too long? What would be valid? How do I fix this? Or better yet, iTunes should just rename the file itself and save me the hassle of this error message. Update After deleting, reimporting, and reconsolidating small groups of tracks, I discovered the file that was troubling iTunes. The file name including the ".mp3" extension was 134 characters long. I had to shorten it to 130 characters before iTunes would consolidate it. If you run into this error message, give that a try. Update 2 The comment from Torkel inspired me to write this quick application -- iTunesFix. It is not a script, but a full-fledged .NET application. As such, it requres you to install the .NET framework and to trust that I haven't put anything evil in the exe. Run the program and browse for your iTunes Music Library.xml file. The program will scan the file looking for any file names that are over 130 characters in length. It will list them out for you to rename, delete, or otherwise manage as you will. to move it to an external drive. However, you need to be aware that you don't move all of your iTunes library files; this can make iTunes confused. Here's how you move your iTunes media files to an external drive. Have a look inside your iTunes folder; it's in the Music folder in your home folder (the one with the house icon and your user name). You'll see the following files: You'll also have an iTunes Media folder; you don't see one in the screenshot above, taken from my iMac, because mine is on an external drive. Don't move this iTunes folder; the library files should remain in your home folder, or iTunes can have problems. So, to start the process, back up your iTunes folder, just in case anything goes wrong. When you've done that, in iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences, and then click Advanced. Check Keep iTunes Media folder organized; this copies all of your media files to the iTunes Media folder. They may all be there, but it's possible that some are in other locations. This ensures that none of your files get lost. Next, in those same Advanced preferences, click the Change button next to iTunes Media Folder location. Choose the location for the new folder. Click New Folder, and name this folder iTunes Media. Click OK to close the preferences window. Choose File > Library > Organize Library, and, in the window that displays, check Consolidate Files, and then click OK. iTunes will now copy all you files. Get a cup of tea or coffee; if you're doing this because you're running out of space, you'll have a lot to copy, and it will take a while. When this is finished, quit and relaunch iTunes, and check the Advanced preferences to ensure that iTunes is looking in the correct location. You can now delete the iTunes Media folder on your startup volume. I'd recommend holding on to the backup for a while, just in case some of your files didn't get copied correctly during the process of organizing and consolidating your library; I've seen this happen. You'll now have lots more free space on your start volume. Related Posts:Beware of iTunes Media OrganizationTuneSpan Splits Y
