Canon lens error. Canon lens error is usually reported as E18 error. The problem is common for most cameras with telescopic lens barrel. Other manufacturers might have a different name for the same problem (lens error, access error, zoom error, lens obstructed, focus error...). Some cameras only display a numerical error, such as E18. Due to the common nature of this problem, it seems that Canon has dropped the numerical marking of this error in newer cameras, and is now using the term "lens error". Canon lens error (E18 error) happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend or retract. The problem can happen due to a number of reasons: If dirt or sand get into the lens mechanism If a a user dropps his or her camera with the lens extended Another reason is turning on the camera in a situation where the lens cannot extend fully, like, inside the camera case or a pocket Or if the batteries run out while the camera is being turned on or off. So the batteries run out while the lens is extending or retracting. Older models of Canon camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a small "E18" sign in the lower-left corner of the display. Some cameras might not beep or show any message, depending on the manufacturer and model. The lens will get stuck in the extended position, and refuse to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off. In some cases, the lens might extend or retract to a certain amount, but not fully. Here is what the lens error (E18 error on Canon) looks like. You just get a black screen with small "E18" sign in the lower-left corner: Photo: Canon lens error It seems that more and more people are showing up who took good care of their camera, and still received a lens (E18) error. How To Restart Canon Camera
story is just amazing. It is so long and detailed that it seems really unlikely someone made it up. It is a story of a guy named Tom, trying to get a refund from Canon for his faulty camera. You guessed http://www.e18error.com/ right, he had an E18 code problem. There was no way for us to get in touch with the poster (Tom McDonald), but Tom, if you're reading this, and would like this post removed from our website, feel free to contact us. 2005/05/21 - I was filming my child using my Canon Powershot s500 Digital Elf and walking down stairs. I was also holding my youngest child in my other arm. When I neared the bottom step I fumbled my camera and it http://www.e18error.com/canonstory.html fell about 3 feet, tumbled down the remaining 3 stairs and then skidded to the wall opposite the stairs. I picked up the camera and it was still filming, but everything was out of focus. I was relieved that it was still filming as I thought this meant it was still working. I reviewed the accident in my mind and thought it wasn’t that bad and that a Canon camera should be able to handle the shock of a 3 foot fall to a well padded carpet and 3 other minor shocks from the smaller tumbles and skids it took after the main shock. I figured it would be sturdy like my cell phone which I’ve dropped many times with no ill effects. Unfortunately, the lens was extended during all these shocks and as you will see later in this blog that was very relevant. In any case, I thought if I toggled my camera on and off I would get my focus back. However, I got the mysterious E18 error when turning on my Canon Powershot camera. Thereafter it would do nothing but show E18 in the view screen. I searched the web and found reams of pages from other Canon customers who have had the same problem. Essentially it is a problem with the moving parts of the lens housing and that it can be triggered by such silly things as touching the lens while it is in motion or turning off the camera
