The program that I was trying to open was already open (RDC), so I force quit it in the list. After force quitting the offending application I was then able to start it again, without coming up against the "Error code -1712" error again. Category:Mac Share this conversation Expert: Omar C replied6 years ago. Hello,Error code 1712 means the "application timed out." I would recommend hitting the Apple, Option and Esc keys to bring up the Force Quit menu and http://www.justanswer.com/mac-computers/30x65-rid-error-code-1712-mac-when-try-access.html quit out of Word, then try again. Also make sure to do any Microsoft Office 2004 updates by running the Microsoft update which should be in the Office 2004 folder under the Applications folder on your hard drive. You can also download the updates directly here:http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspxIf none of that works then you will need to uninstall/reinstall Office for Mac. There is a Remove Office tool under the Microsoft Office 2004 folder | Additional Tools. In other words, OS X gave Preview a certain amount of time to do something and Preview took too long (more here). It's possible that the Preview process is open but it may not appear to be so. Open up Activity Monitor (/Applictions/Utilities/) and look for something in that list called Preview. If it is there, select it and force quit it. I suggest this since this is a common problem with 1712 errors. Important Links: Community Guidelines : Use the reputation system if you've been helped.
