Posted by fairlane32 on 19 Oct 2009 8:01 Hi Lynster, Sorry to take so long, I was on vacation, yes, the model printer is a 5310n wireless printer. There is only one slot for a memory stick. Does this help? Thanks again, Philip Like 0 Reply You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. Posted by llynster on 19 Oct 2009 8:38 Suggested Answer The base memory is "soldered" to the controller board and the slot you see is for memory expansion. If you pull out the expansion RAM, will the machine POST (Power-Up-Self-Test) OK? Has this expansion RAM ever worked? that there is an option to get the recovery media, specifically Windows 8.1, on an 8GB USB flash drive. If you work in an IT department, these flash drives might http://www.techunboxed.com/2014/09/how-to-disable-write-protection-on-dell.html start piling up and you might want to try and use them, at least some of them, for something else. Here's the rub... the freaking things are read only. UPDATE:Some of the commentator's below are complaining about error code: -2. I did some more testing and after memory stick a few successful and a few unsuccessful attempts, I'm thinking that the firmware might have changed. Of the drives that I have, it seems the ones with the multi-colored labels on the back work fine after using the low-level format utility (one 8GB writable partition). The utility failed with error code: -2 and bricked the drives on all the ones I've tested that have solid blue labels, light blue or dell memory stick dark blue. Don't use this utility if your drive has a solid blue label on the back. UPDATE 2:Tojoposted a solution for the blue label Dell drives in the comments below. Thanks Tojo! The new guide can be found athttp://www.techunboxed.com/2015/03/how-to-disable-write-protection-on-dell.html. I don't know about Dell's consumer level PC's but stuff like the Latitude laptops can be had with an optional 8GB bootable USB 3.0 flash drive with Windows 8.1 on it. Unfortunately, these flash drives are write protected. They can't be written to, formatted, or partitioned, but if you're willing to loose all the data currently on the drive, they can be made to work. Low level formatting the drive will wipe all the data and disable the write protection. A Dell USB flash drive without it's skin A close up of the USB controller chip - Phison PS2251-07 Nope. Cant write here. The low level format utility linked below works with the USB controller chip, PS2251-07, on the current USB flash drives that come from Dell. I have no idea if it will work with any other flash drive or if it will continue to work in the future if the controller changes. Storage, often wrongly referred to as memory, is permanent data stored on a hard drive or solid state drive. A CPU cache is a small amount of often-needed memory that is stored on a CPU chip. Both the RAM and CPU cache are temporary data stores that are cleared when your computer is turned off. One way to think of the difference between these different types of storage is to imagine them as paper documents. The cache is a list of names or numbers you constantly refer to and keep close at hand. A folder full of papers you may need for your current task is similar to computer memory or RAM. The file cabinet full of folders for all your projects is like the storage on your hard drive. Memory problems are less common than other computer problems because memory sticks have no moving parts and thus fewer points of failure. However, due to this many RAM problems go undiagnosed. Memory usually will last longer than other computer components so manufacturers offer longer warranties for it than other parts. If you buy brand name memory it will likely have a lifetime warranty. Symptoms of a RAM ProblemWhen you first turn on your computer it runs fine, but as you go about your business you notice that its performance diminishes. By lunch time, websites take minutes to load and local programs run at a snail's pace. This type of gradual deterioration of PC performance, especially with memory-intensive programs, may be caused by a RAM problem. Your computer randomly restarts while you are in the middle of something or freeze sporadically. It may also reboot almost immediately upon opening the desktop. This could be a sign of faulty RAM. A blue screen with white text flashes before restarting. Blue-screen errors are annoying because you don't even have a chance to read the error message. Bad RAM is one thing that cause them. Files—particularly ones you frequently access and save—seem to be inexplicably corrupted. RAM issues can lead to this problem, which can worsen over time. The file structure of your hard drive may slowly degenerate and you will no longer be able to boot your machine. Your attempts to install a new program repeatedly fail for u
