business hours without an apparent reason, and of course users were .net runtime 2.0 error clr20r3 complaining because of lost sessions etc…; the following entry was added to the Application event log: Event windows event id 5000 Type: Error Event Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting Event Category: None Event ID: 5000 Date: 9/28/2005 Time: 3:18:02 PM User: N/A Computer: IIS-SERVER Description: EventType clr20r3, P1 https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/4c6c7d2a-f62c-4369-8f63-4ae30c23a257/net-runtime-20-error-reporting-event-id-5000-systemoutofmemoryexception-p10-nil?forum=operationsmanagergeneral w3wp.exe, P2 6.0.3790.1830, P3 42435be1, P4 app_web_7437ep-9, P5 0.0.0.0, P6 433b1670, P7 9, P8 a, P9 system.exception, P10 NIL The first thing to do when we have a specific error message is to search the Knowledge Base for known issues/hotfixes etc…, and was quite easy to find the article Unhandled exceptions cause ASP.NET-based applications to unexpectedly quit https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/carloc/2007/10/19/net-runtime-2-0-error-event-id5000/ in the .NET Framework 2.0 which I already used more than once in the past to resolve similar issues; I usually suggest the customer to first apply the solution described in "Method 2": Method 2Change the unhandled exception policy back to the default behavior that occurs in the .NET Framework 1.1 and in the .NET Framework 1.0. Note We do not recommend that you change the default behavior. If you ignore exceptions, the application may leak resources and abandon locks. To enable this default behavior, add the following code to the Aspnet.config file that is located in the following folder: %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

Event Type: Error Event Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting Event Category: None Event ID: 5000 Date: 4/29/2009 Time: 10:58:10 PM User: N/A Computer: removed this Description: EventType clr20r3, P1 evemon.exe, P2 1.2.7.1301, P3 49ea37c8, P4 system.windows.forms, P5 2.0.0.0, P6 4889dee7, P7 6cd3, P8 18, net runtime 2.0 P9 system.argumentexception, P10 NIL. Data: //hex representation of the above Description The application itself crashes with out displaying an error (despite having a error handling UI), the above messages was copied out of the Windows Event log. The end user has re-installed .NET and updated to the latest versions. The .PDB files are distributed with every release version of the program to aid in debugging and testing, the user with the problem in question has the full complement of PDB files for the correct version of EVEMon. Is there a specific, tried and tested technique to analyse and diagnose this type of crash? and if so what tools and technologies are available to aid in debugging? Special Thanks I would like to give special thanks to Steffen Opel and highlight that his answer whilst not directly answering the question I was asking, addressed the bigger issue with my code base that the global error handling was missing an important component. c# .net crash event-log crash-reports share|improve this question edited Aug 31 '09 at 13:17 Steffen Opel 45k6127162 asked May 2 '09 at 9:55 Richard Slater 3,66932764 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 18 down vote accepted +100 This is how I would tackle the problem for a end user with a crash.
