Close Sign In Print Article Products Related Articles Article Languages Subscribe to this Article Manage your Subscriptions Problem NetBackup Administration Console -> Media and Device Management -> Devices -> Media servers -> The server appears as offline Right https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000010104 click on the media server and select “Stop/Restart Device Manager” and got the error: “Error connecting to oprd on MEDIA-SERVER-NAME: cannot connect to vmd” Error Message Error connecting to oprd on MEDIA-SERVER-NAME: cannot connect to vmd Cause From Master server run a telnet to the media server’s PBX port: telnet MEDIA-SERVER-NAME 1556 If the telnet command doesn't work, make sure that: A) If there is a firewall between both servers, it should allow bidirectional communication between them through vnetd (13724) and PBX (1556) ports. B) If any of these servers have “Windows Firewall” or any other Firewall software, they should allow communication from and to vnetd (13724) and PBX (1556) ports. Try to disable this software temporally and then run the telnet again. After solving the communication issues between master and media, stop and start all NetBackup services in the media server: install_path\NetBackup\bin>bpdown -f -vinstall_path\NetBackup\bin>bpps -> make sure that any process is runninginstall_path\NetBackup\bin>bpup -f -v Then run this command to set the media server as active: install_path\\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbemmcmd -updatehost -machinename MEDIA-SERVER-NAME -machinestateop set_tape_active -machinetype media -masterserver MASTER-SERVER-NAME if this issue persist, follow these steps to na

This behavior occurs during scheduled and manual backups.An installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1 and all latest Windows Critical and Security updates on the Master server coincide with the start day for the problem, but I'm not sure if this is coincidental. One of the Media servers had W2k3 SP1 and all relevant Windows Critical and Security updates applied on the same day.For info both Media servers and the clients they serve sit in the other side of a firewall from the Master server.The Media Manager service on all three servers is started and working. All three servers and all clients are Windows OS.If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
