Either it could be bad blocks on the disk or someone hacked your machine. In this situation first suggestion would be to check /var/log/messages for any disk related alerts (might see some sense key alerts). tail

-n 100 /var/log/messages tail -f /var/log/messages If you notice any disk issues , try any disk utility to confirm this. One option would be use smarttools. You can check smartool option to fix bad blocks. If you already installed it you can take the advantage of that. Next immediate action would be take backup of your system. Good if you already have it :-). If you have good backup its safe to reboot. If bashrc input/output error your system was hacked there are chances they might messed up your file and system would not work after reboot. You can also try fsck but it really dont fix most time if it bad block issue. Fsck can fix only if it related to any filesystem related issues. Usually fsck will fail in between as when it try to read the file at bad block. Now if try to reboot , it can also give the same output. You can try init 6. # reboot bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error # shutdown -r now bash: /sbin/shutdown: Input/output error If the above reboot commands doesnot work try either forced reboot or shutdown . Forced Reboot echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger Forced Shutdown echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo o > /proc/sysrq-trigger You might also likeHow To Fix / Repair Bad Blocks In LinuxHow To Backup LVM Configuration On Linux (vgcfgbackup & vgcfgrestore)Linux Crontab: How To Configure Cron With Best Examples? How To List Linux Pci Devices Using lspci CommandSet Date And Time In Linux And Sync With Hardware (CMOS)Linux Hdparm Command: Display Hard Disk Model and Serial NumberLinux - Manage Spaces And Special Characters In File NameUnderstand Linux Su Command Function With ExampleHow To Use Linux Grep Command To Find StringsHow To Create / Remove S

The kernel version is 2.6.24-19-generic. Sometimes, suddenly something happens and then every command from bash gives the same error: ~$ autoconf -V -bash: /usr/bin/autoconf: Input/output error ~$ ad -bash: /usr/bin/python: Input/output error The file system becomes read-only and no files can even be 'touch'ed. However, uname -r (and possibly other commands) still keep working. If you press Tab-Tab at the terminal, it hangs and then there is no way other than hard-boot to get stuff to work again. Can anyone suggest something to repair this annoying recurrence. Last edited by manish_jain; September 27th, 2008 at 12:48 AM. Can you become root? All solutions will require root access so if you can't run sudo, can you at least su? Can you run shutdown? How about init? –terdon♦ Apr 12 '14 at 20:04 No, I can't be root. I didn't set Ubuntu's root password! :( –Mohsen Apr 12 '14 at 20:12 @Mohsen Setting a root password would not make any difference. You'd have to run su instead of sudo, but you'd run into the same problem. If you have no way to gain root access, you cannot reboot. –Gilles Apr 12 '14 at 23:45 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote If you have root access, you can try to do this: # echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger (that will immediately reboot the system without syncing or unmounting your disks.) Unfortunately, I do not think there is a way to reboot without root privileges. share|improve this answer answered Apr 12 '14 at
