In my /etc/fstab I have the following line: //172.22.64.50/Web/ /mnt/netapp smbfs username=*****,password=******,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm 0 0 This has been working for over a http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/168389/smbfs-mount-suddenly-stopped-working-cifs-error year now. Then, all of the sudden when I now try to type mount -a I get the following error: root@ks-vps:~# mount -a mount error(5): Input/output error Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) I've been unable to find a solution or anything to point me in the correct direction on Google, so I’m hoping someone here can have a few tips. You should try mount /mnt/netapp to make sure it is not some other drive generating the error. E.g. your local drive having problems and generating the error, and therefor the network mount failing as well. –Anthon Nov 17 '14 at 8:10 Hello @Anthon. When I try that, I get this: root@ks-vps:~# mount /mnt/netapp mount erro

I immediately ran into the problem where a mounted CIFS (smb / samba) share would get an Input/Output error, when contents of the share folders were viewed in Nautilus (file viewer in Gnome). The below documents the problem, and the fix. Server machine: Centos 5 (up2dated). Served mounts over CIFS just fine when the desktop below was running Hardy Heron Desktop machine: Ubuntu Karmic Koala - fresh install, all security patches updated Duplicate the Issue: In fstab on desktop: //192.168.1.11/systemroot /a_mymount cifs username=myself,password=mypassword,iocharset=utf8 ,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 0 0 boot desktop machine: open /a_mymount in gnome-nautilus, click on a folder in the mount, and immediately get 'input/output error' in nautilus, and the mount breaks. Oddly, accessing the mount through a command line prompt (before it was broken above) seemed to work fine though. Mounting another mount to the same karmic koala desktop from a vanilla windows 2003 server works fine though. Things only break when I mount from Centos 5 servers. The problem turns out to be LinuxExtensions to CIFS (which windows does not use, so the windows 2003 server is OK when mounted). Linux extensions in CIFS seem
