I installed gtkterm to connect to the RPi.When I connect to the appropriate pins (red -> 5V, black -> GND, white -> TDX, green

You need to use that port in your terminal program to connect to the Pi console. I see that gtkterm is using /dev/ttyS0 as the port, should that be correct? How do I check? What exactly is a ttyUSBx, how do I find that information, and what do I do with it? Posts: 9Joined: Mon Jan 28, 2013 2:15 pm by obcd » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:08 pm gtkterm should have a way to set the comport it's using among other settings like the baudrate. You could check the logfiles to see what happens if you plug in the usb connector. tail -f /var/log/messages before you plug the device in.Normally, the os detects the device as usb2serial adapter and installs a driver for it. That driver will create an additional ttyUSB0 or ttyUSB1 port. (The number depends upon what exists already)If gtkterm isn't using the correct serial port, it can't work. I have got FC7 installed. I am debugging my JAva program that communicates over the serial port. I order to do that i want to check that the serial port i really OK. For this i have installed gtkterm from which i can send data to another computer that uses hyperterminal. This works on one of my computers. But on the other computer i cannot establish the communication. The port is setup to /dev/ttyS0 From GTKterm i get the following message: Control signals read: Input/output error setserial gives: /dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4 dmesg | grep ttyS0 gives: 00:02: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A If i instead boot WINDOWS i have no problems with accessing COM1 so the port seems to work OK. Any ideas how i will get my serial port to work? //Paul paul1966 View Public Profile Find all posts by paul1966 #2 11th March 2008, 05:02 PM PhillyFloyd Offline Registered User Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Washington DC Posts: 338 A common problem is sharing interrupt 4 with another serial port, do you ttyS2 also on the system? If so you would need to disable it either by removing the hardware or using setserial for example: setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart none port 0x0 irq 0 __________________ "You're as useless as a jiffy in a tickless kernel." But i do not know what that means. ttyS0 is setup for irq4
