save an image of the Machintosh HD resulted in an error msg saying 'not enough' free space. Once formatted and with 1TB free space another attempt at saving the drive as an image to my external drive resulted in an error messgae after 10 mins saying 'Input/output error. This keeps happening.I've also tried to 'verfify disk' on both external and enternal drives and all is coming back fine.Is there anything else i can do to retrive the contents of my macbook? The information on there is macbook error codes extremely important to me and i'm gutted and worn out at this point. I'm tempted to bring it for a repair at my local mac shop but worried it will cost a fortune. Also it mite be worth mentioning that a few weeks ago i got a message saying 'start-up disk almost full' so i began clearing about 20 gig from my HD. Didn't recieve that message again. At the current time there is 6 gig free. Also the day before this problem began, the music making software i use gave a warning saying something along the lines of 'Cannot reload from save undo history'. This program crashes on me quite frequently but always returns to where it was when it crashed after i reopen the project, but it was now saying it could no longer do that. Alarm bells were obviously ringing but i didnt have time to investigate at that time. Full of regret now!! Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated. Many thanksR MacBook Pro Posted on Jan 25, 2014 4:27 PM I have this question too Close Q: Macbook pro won't boot, Disk utility input/output error All replies Helpful answers Page 1 Next by BDAqua, BDAqua Jan 25, 2014 4:38 PM in response to Rian... Its sole HDD is a 750GB drive, formatted with Bootcamp. It's still running reasonably well, but in running a defragment pass on it, I've identified that there are a bunch of files which are refusing to be moved by the defragmenter (iDefrag). iDefrag reports a POSIX error code of 5 when accessing the files. Picking one at random and trying to copy the file to another location in the shell http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/129030/how-to-identify-and-fix-files-with-corrupted-inaccessible-disk-blocks also reports an error, which makes me think the problem is real and with the disk / FS. Output of cp is: cp: unity_nophysx.nexe: Input/output error Error code 5 is 'access denied' as far as I'm aware, but the defrag process is running as administrator and running cp using sudo on the suspect file makes no difference. Disk Utility, fsck and the Apple Hardware Test all claim the disk is fine. No SMART errors reported, and while there were some permissions errors, they weren't with the files iDefrag is complaining about, and Disk Utility claims to have fixed them without complaint. There are maybe a hundred or more corrupted files, but still a very small fraction of the drive. As far as I can tell, no system files or crucial data are affected. While it would be nice to retrieve the data, I don't mind reinstalling or going to backups. At this point I don't know if it's really the drive dying, just some bad sectors due to the drive being moved while writing, or some other minor corruption that can be worked around. I'm assuming the worst case, and that most likely I'll have to get a slightly larger HDD and clone the existing drive to avoid having to rebuild the system. My question is really how I go about marking those broken files as properly broken and fixing or purging them, so that a clone of the disk will succ

It has been given to me without hard drive in it and I have no clue about what it went through. The laptop works perfectly booting from Ubuntu cd. I have two hard drives to try with, both “Western Digital” and both 160 gb: Hard Drive 1: WD1600BEKT, brand new guaranteed by the ebay seller to input output error be specifically compatible with my MacBook Pro A1150; Hard Drive 2: WD1600BEVT, pretty old. I've installed both drives (one per time obviously) in a Dell Inspiron 1525, installed Ubuntu OS and both drives worked perfectly. Now I install the drives in the MacBook, and every time I do so I call one SMC reset and three PRAM resets. 50% of the times the drive is detected and a faulty Ubuntu OS is loaded. 50% of the times the drive is not seen at all and I get the question mark folder. Same goes when I boot the pc from Ubuntu cd, 50% of the times the hard drive is shown on “Disks” application, 50% it doesn't appear. When “Disks” shows the hard drive, still the hard drive is not really accessible, only one time out of dozens SMART data was available. Time to install Ubuntu, or at least try: 50% of the times the hard drive is not detected and installation cannot be initiated; 50% of the times the hard drive is detected, the installation seems to be started but after few seconds I get “Input/output error during read on /dev
