All works fine except that the main HD where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the http://askubuntu.com/questions/74105/how-do-you-repair-an-input-output-error-in-an-ntfs-partition error message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu? windows ntfs share|improve this question edited May 15 at 19:06 muru 68.9k12125176 asked Oct 31 '11 at 15:13 Calixte 67961528 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 17 down vote accepted chkdsk /R is a pretty important command when things get hairy with NTFS. So I tried to reboot, input output error but couldn't. It shows below error and freezed The disk drive for /tmp is not ready yet or not present So I booted to recovery mode and copied some important files to usb disk(FAT32). Then I did fsck in the recovery mode. (maybe I shouldn't do it). After that, it can be booted in normal mode. So I tried to copy other files to external HDD(NTFS) but it failed while copying. All programs are gone and become black screen with error like I/O Error dev sda ...(I cannot remember exactly.) So I tried as I did with usb disk but this time it failed while copying. Again with Input/output error message. I also tried rsync or tar but they also give the same message. I also used liveCD and tried to move from internal HDD(ubuntu installed) to external. But it also failed. I want to copy other files also but I cannot. Is there any way I can recover it? Or it already becomes impossible? 14.04 boot hard-drive share|improve this question asked Sep 21 at 14:14 user270700 11 add a comment| active oldest votes Know someone
