You might try using "dd" to read the backup device (sendingthe output to /dev/null) and see input output error what "dd" has to say about it. Most dd's are these days. Ifyours isn't, build and use the latest coreutils

Try unzip filename.tar.gz and gunzip filename.tar.gz and see what the output is. –Max Leske Apr 1 '13 at 13:06 From where did you get that zip file? –Abimaran Kugathasan Apr 1 '13 at 13:08 This file is system generated file from crontab. –Kabir Apr 1 '13 at 13:08 @Max Leske thanks for you suggestion but when i tried gunzip filename.tar.gz it gives error message : not in gzip format –Kabir Apr 1 '13 at 13:10 | show 2 more comments 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 85 down vote accepted If file filename.tar.gz gives this message: POSIX tar archive, the archive is a tar, not a GZip archive.
