You can try ddrescue, it may be able to work around the broken path. Beware though, that you will lose data. Restoring from backup will be easier :) The correct usage of ddrescue is as follows: sudo apt-get install gddrescue sudo ddrescue /dev/sdc1 /dev/sda1 or if you want to pipe stdout to the progess monitoring tool: sudo ddrescue /dev/sdc1 /dev/sda1 | pv share|improve this answer edited Sep 27 at 22:47 David Foerster 10.7k93052 answered Feb 9 '13 at 13:26 Dennis Kaarsemaker 4,9741432 yes i said that but restoring from backup it's on that drive.. and i this drive have only sector problem, well how can i use that command? im just newbie linux user.. –Erazer Feb 9 '13 at 13:31 2 So your backup is on the same drive as the drive you're bcaking up?! boggles –Dennis Kaarsemaker Feb 9 '13 at 13:44 1 well same drive yes but not on same partition. well i'm little bit stupid :'( backup its not imporant at all –Erazer Fe

It is about 6 years old and is having problems. When booted from a 10.4 live CD. Most of the time the hard drive reports that it is not a S.M.A.R.T. capable drive. Once, it was, able to read the SMART data and reported OK except 3 bad sectors. From the above and especially the "smart / no smart" I am assuming that there is likely a controller problem on the drive as well as the bad sectors. dd exits with the following error :- Code: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/media/Iomega\ HDD/backup/pc130111.img dd: reading `/dev/sda1': Input/output error 6406224+0 records in 6406224+0 records out 3279986688 bytes (3.3 GB) copied, 432.584 s, 7.6 MB/s ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ The windows system still runs, but its time for an .img and a new drive, before it dies. What do I need to do here to get a usable copy of this drive ? Ibod. While the corrupted data won't hurt the new drive that it's transferred to, it could bring

When I open the External drive in Finder, It shows it's empty. When I use the option to "Get Info", I get the dialog box stating it has about 300GB input output error Free. I tried to access External Drive using Terminal, but I had no luck. Checking in Disk Utility, It showed that I have many number of files but ZERO folders. I tried to "repair disk", in the process the external Drive got unmounted in the process. I checked this drive on Windows. I was able to open almost all the folders but I wasn't able to copy anything onto the external drive. One folder caused my windows computer to freeze. Then I connected the drive back onto my MacBook Pro and tried to access the drive through terminal (this time it worked!) and then I tried to delete a folder with rm command, I got an "input/output error". I tried to enter in to the folder with "cd" command but my terminal got frozen. What should i do to recover the files in that folder? Input/output error It occurs when I try to us commands like df or change to certain directories on the drive. Could this be caused by a hard drive failure? linux hard-drive share|improve this question edited Feb 14 '10 at 17:23 quack quixote 31.3k1068114 asked Jan 25 '10 at 17:12 Gordon 192238 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Yes, it could be caused by hard drive failure. Or a bad cable. Or a good cable that isn't fully plugged in. Or bad RAM. Or other things. Is it consistently certain directories? That makes drive failure a more likely explanation. BACK UP YOUR DATA RIGHT NOW! OK, you're done with that? Now, boot the system off an Ubuntu, Knoppix, or other LiveCD and run fsck on the partition that has problems. If it's filesystem (as opposed to hardware) problems, fsck should be able to fix it. If you're using ext*, you can run badblocks to check for actual physical damage to the platters (the "-c" flag). If you're experiencing hardware problems, just go ahead and buy a new disk. Hard drives are really, really cheap these days. share|improve this answer answered Jan 25 '10 at 17:41 CarlF 8,08811731 run badblocks first, then fsck. fsck will just make things worse if the drive is dying. –user23307 Feb 14 '10 at
