Fdisk Cannot Open Input Output Error
2006/09/23 19:29:51 Has anyone ever heard of this before?Basically I have a system that is input/output error during read on /dev/sda about 4 years old that has been running Windows Home edition. When I look into the BIOS I can see the hard

drive (Samsung) and the CD-ROM just fine. Even when I pop in CD 1 of CENTOS 4, it shows that it saw the hard drive. However, when I am in the GUI installation, after I push Enter fdisk: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0: input/output error for English Keyboard, it sits there for a minute and then comes back with an error:"input/output error during read on /dev/hda"I can click retry, ignore or cancel. No matter what I press, it just comes up again instantly. After I push anything about 20 times I get the screen asking if I want to use some partition druid or automatic and I have tried both, and then it says the same error:"input/output error during input/output error during write on /dev/sdb read on /dev/hda"It then says it cannot continue and restarts the computer. I noticed that after it restarts the computer, I go into the BIOS and my hard drive isn't there. However, if I turn the computer off and then on, it is there in the BIOS.Anyone know a workaround this? What is causing this? It is definitely seeing it when I first get into the installation, but it doesn't seem to find it correctly when it needs to actually do the installing!Any help is appreciated. (HP Pavilion 431.uk)What I did: -went into BIOS, checked hd access method "Other" instead of "DOS"-started a new install of Win XP home-deleted all partitions-created 2 new ones, one was formated using ntfs, other left unformated-put in Centos 4.2 install CD after Windows was installed-did a manual partitioning as follows: deleted the unformated partition, created /boot (100MB), /root (6500MB -force to be a primary), /swap (384MB) and the rest went to /homeAfter that the install proceded as usual. This method is probably not the best one there is but is the only one I managed to pull of after 10 hours of fiddling.Cheers,Nemanja Top Display posts from previous: A

Can you please clarify what you mean by initialize? –Mike B Jun 15 '12 at 17:52 1 Mike, When you set up a new server, on the first boot you enter the RAID BIOS and configure the array. –Dmitri Chubarov Jun 15 '12 at 17:53 3 See this array configuration guide –Dmitri Chubarov Jun 15 '12 at 17:57 @DmitriChubarov Perfect. That controller uses the CCISS block driver under Red Hat/CentOS 5.x. This would present your logical devices to the OS as /dev/cciss/c0dXpY, where X is the controller number and Y is the partition number. For most systems, look f
