That will wipe /deb/sdb, not /dev/sdc which is the required device! –Wilf Feb 18 '14 at 11:53 1 That dd command will wipe it as in it will WIPE IT - be careful... The command needed is likely to be sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1M count=40. It think this will write zeros to the first 40 bytes of the drive. –Wilf Feb 18 '14 at 11:55 1 alternatively use gparted –Olu Feb 18 '14 at 11:57 | show 1 more comment 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Using Gparted may of help - install it, open it, and you should be able to reformat the disk once you have unmounted it. You can do this and other options by selecting the drive in the menu at the top right, and then right-clicking on the partitions. share|improve this answer answered Feb 18 '14 at 12:00 Wilf 15.5k44276 Gparted also has some add-ons that may help in case there is a problem forma

This discussion is locked John Snarski Level 1 (0 points) Q: Partition falied Input/Output Error I'm trying to use an external USB 2.0 WD250GB drive for Time Machine. The drive https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1209139?tstart=0 was attached to a Windows machine and works perfectly. However, when I attach it to my https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-input-output-error-during-read-on-dev-sda-on-installing-ubuntu-10-04.977983/ MBP and try to format it I get the error "Partition falied Input/Output Error". I'm attempting to format for 1 GUID partition HFS+ journaled. This doesn't appear to be a hardware issue because I can reattach the drive to the XP machine, format it and it runs just fine.Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks. And that WD is looking and working on what to do to be more Mac compatible. I use to see a mix of messages about WD MyBook Pro and the Mac Pro and some having issues with these devices a year ago when the Mac Pro came out. Now, seems there is a Leopard related issue. Past OS X releases often required firmware updates to LaCie and Oxford 911-based cases. We all remember the 10.3.0 fiasco with FW devices. But 10.4 also unless it was relatively new case. If you can use another interface (some have 3-4 interfaces, FW800 and eSATA as well as USB/FW400) try that. This is the error message I get "Input/output error during read on /dev/sda" while installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my hard drive. On clicking Retry, The installation shows 15 % completed and returns another error " The ext4 file system creation in partition 5 of SCSI (0,0,0) (sda) failed. The Ubuntu runs perfectly from the pen drive and the disk utility which I ran from Ubuntu showed my disk as healthy ( the utility was not able to format the hard drive either... ). I was able to install windows XP on the same hard drive later after formatting it.It seems there is nothing wrong with my hard drive as even running chkdsk didnt bring out anything.I am not sure if I missing out anything here...any help would be much appreciated. Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) is the latest version available until April when a new release 11.04 is scheduled. Prior to attempting to install Ubuntu, it is necessary to create a partition on your disk. If you entire disk is already formatted for WinXP on an NTFS file system, you need to repartition the disk and create at least say a 10-20GB or more partion for EXT4 in which to install Ubuntu. If you don't setup the EXT4 partition prior to attempting to install Ubuntu - that could be the cause of your I/O problems. From what you describe, I would boot up from your USB, and then use the GParted partition editor to repartition your 250GB harddrive to create the EXT4 parti
