Input/Output Error up vote 0 down vote favorite I recently had a problem where one http://askubuntu.com/questions/332263/something-went-wrong-with-my-external-hd-ubuntu-cant-mount-it of my NTFS hard drives stopped working. I have tried chkdsk /f on windows 10, 3 times with no success. And also sudo ntfsfix /dev/sdi1 , with no success. Is there anyone who knows any other approach other than re-formatting? mount hard-drive ntfs share|improve this question edited Sep 24 '15 at 5:12 0xF2 2,03821538 asked Sep 23 '15 at 21:38 Preet Basson 1 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote I would http://askubuntu.com/questions/677653/ntfs-corrupted-input-output-error suggest installing test disk, sudo apt-get install testdisk and running a scan on your drive, sudo testdisk be aware that the scan might take long time depending on size of disk. If that doesnt work you have no other option but to use a tool like 'Hdd Regenerator' or 'Spinrite' from a bootable cd. share|improve this answer answered Sep 23 '15 at 22:51 H. Freeze 41019 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote If running chkdsk isn't working you might have a bad hard drive. I would suggest using a utility like GSmartControl to test the physical to make sure it's not already dead or about to be. share|improve this answer answered Sep 24 '15 at 1:37 Ian Lantzy 408220 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. I asked a question on AskUbuntu and got the answer to use Windows's chkdsk /f to repair the 'corrupted' NTFS partitions. However, my partition is perfectly healthy! However, from the commmand propmpt (DOS mode in Widows XP) the dir commmand worlks listing files in the root subdirectooty as well as folders and provides the correct number of bytes left free on the drive )about 60 gigabytes. I have tried chkdsk on the drive but it cannot access the drive.Without any success I tried to recover data using select all copy and paste to a new external drive as well as xcopy from one drive to the other from the DOS c: prompt mode and also tried my computer backup program. I was only ablle to backup 100K of data before the backup was aborted. Are the remainder of the drives's contents salvageable? (The predominant error message given is an I/O (input/output) device error). This is a new development. Until then the external drive worked fine.
