You can try ddrescue, it may be able to work around the broken path. Beware though, that you will lose data. Restoring from backup will be easier :) The correct usage of ddrescue is as follows: sudo apt-get install gddrescue sudo ddrescue /dev/sdc1 /dev/sda1 or if you want to pipe stdout to the progess monitoring tool: sudo ddrescue /dev/sdc1 /dev/sda1 | pv share|improve this answer edited Sep 27 at 22:47 David Foer

I am trying to copy files to it using rsync. Here is the problem; after the process starts, I obtain 'input/output error'. Rsync continues the process, however I cannot read the harddisk directory. This problem only occurs after a while, like one hour later. Previously I used this harddisk to backup my MacBook and I did not receive this error; the process continued like eight hours without an error. I also use another 1 TB external harddisk without any problem. I used GParted to partition the disk with gtp partition table and ext4 format. I ran fsck command and did not obtain any errors. I also include the last lines of the output of dmesg command. I am on a Dell Latitude with Linux Mint 17, if this is relevant. Cheers. But I have experienced "Input/output error": $ rm pic -R rm: cannot remove `pic/60.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/006.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/008.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/011.jpg': Input/output error $ ls -la pic ls: cannot access pic/60.jpg: Input/output input output error error -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 011.jpg I was wondering what the problem is? How can I recover or remove the directory pic and all of its content? My OS is Ubuntu 12.04, and the removable hard drive has ntfs filesystem. Other directories not containing or inside pic on the removable hard drive are working fine. I want to be very clear - this drive works 100% flawlessly on other machines (both windows and other linux flavors)During mount attempts, I'm getting Input/Output Errors. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here.I've got the following packages installed directly from EPEL:Code: Select all(1/2): ntfs-3g-2014.2.15-6.el6.x86_64.rpm | 258 kB 00:00
(2/2): ntfsprogs-2014.2.15-6.el6.x86_64.rpm | 235 kB 00:00
I can use the following command to mount it (and it mounts successfully):Code: Select all$ sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sdd1 /mnt/usbI just cannot read or write anything to it.Code: Select all$ ls /mnt/usb
ls: reading directory .: Input/output errorI however *CAN* write to it on my Fedora20 and Windows7 boxes. Can anyone give me an idea as to what I'm doing wrong? The Fedora20 box has the same RPMs installed.I have the Seagate Diagnostic tools installed on my Windows7 box and it passes every single diagnostic test.I have even zero'd the thing out, reformatted NTFS and still no luck. Any help is appreciated! Last edited by crock on 2014/11/21 12:16:09, edited 1 time in total. I had previously installed the ntfs fuse driver via rpmforge (naughty me) and I ended up having to remove it, disable rpmforge and install all the nfs stuff from elrepo - then it worked fine. I think the rpmforge fuse driver was "marked" as a later version than the EPEL one, so yum installed that everytime until I disabled rpmforge. Exact same symptoms (I/O error). But if you're 100% sure you got it from EPEL, then tha's a different story. Top TrevorH Forum Moderator Posts: 16871
