Also, I would scan both your USB drive and your laptop's hard drive with "badblocks -v". blog Tunes What Linux distro should you put on that old computer? Each time I attempt an install I received an "[Errno 5] Input/output error", followed by the following message before the installer exits: "The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a http://askubuntu.com/questions/501505/ubuntu-14-04-errno-5-input-output-error-during-installation faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment." In order to attempt to remedy this I have so far tried installing Ubuntu to two different hard disks, one of which is brand new, and each time I have received the same error "Errno 5" message. I have also tried installing from 3 different USB sticks using torrent and Ubuntu site iso images burned using both Unetbootin and Startup Disk Creator. Again, these measures have proved fruitless. The installation process varies depending of the iso I use, with the Ubuntu download page iso exiting at an earlier stage compared to the torrented iso. The later torrent iso returns an error and exits when I am prompted for my name, computer's ID and password. I've never experienced anything like this when installing previous versions of Ubuntu. I'm absolutely stumped! Does anyone have any more ideas? usb system-installation iso usb-installation share|improve this question asked Jul 23 '14 at 10:50 andybot 16114 I tried the 14.04.1 update yesterday. All works fine except that the main HD where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the error message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error 5 input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu? windows ntfs share|improve this question edited May 15 at 19:06 muru 69.1k12125176 asked Oct 31 '11 at 15:13 Calixte 68461528 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 17 down vote accepted chkdsk /R is a pretty important command when things get hairy with NTFS. Unfortunately I don't know of a Linux tool that comes close to covering everything it does. In short, to run it, you're going to need some sort of Windows recovery disk. If you don't have one to hand, there's an ISO offered up in a thread on another set of support forums (see the first answer). There are tools like ntfsfix (part of the ntfsprog

If you could post the exact error messages (should be some in /var/log/syslog or dmesg, maybe even with lsblk to see which drive is which) that would help show if it's USB errors or HD errors. I get those occasionally with flash drives & card readers, sometimes a different USB port helps, or a different wire, hub, or card reader. And sometimes the USB device itself just starts "going bad," or doesn't get along with the other USB parts. For installing Ubuntu, if you booted with the toram option (in the grub boot menu, F6 I think brings up the "other options" menu & lets you manually edit the startup line) that would copy the whole Ubuntu iso into ram at startup,
