Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top “Input/output error” when accessing a directory up vote 39 down vote favorite 9 I want to list and remove the content of a directory on a removable hard drive. But I have experienced "Input/output error": $ rm pic -R rm: cannot remove `pic/60.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/006.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove rm input/output error mac `pic/008.jpg': Input/output error rm: cannot remove `pic/011.jpg': Input/output error $ ls -la pic ls: cannot access pic/60.jpg: Input/output error -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 006.jpg -????????? ? ? ? ? ? 011.jpg I was wondering what the problem is? How can I recover or remove the directory pic and all of its content? My OS is Ubuntu 12.04, and the removable hard drive has ntfs filesystem. Other directories not containing or inside pic on the removable hard drive are working fine. I would copy/clone the the whole partition (using eg. dd) just to make data safe (don't forget to unmount the partition first). Then you can experiment with one of the copies to recover the files and fix filesystem; try to run fsck, or this might help as well: http://www.cgsecurity.org/ (photorec, testdisk) http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2009-11/msg02355.html Login or register to post comments #7 augustin - 05/06/2010 - 06:17 wit

Why? linux ubuntu file-management sudo share|improve this question asked Feb 21 '10 at 16:44 Pieter 33041228 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 11 down vote accepted I suspect filesystem corruption here. As this is likely to be your root filesystem you won't be able to do a full fsck while the system is live, so do sudo shutdown -r -F now which should shutdown and reboot (the -r) forcing a run of fsck (the -F) as the system comes back up (at a point where issues found can be more safely fixed). You might want to update your backups first, if only for the sake of paranoia (in case something is seriously wrong and the machine won't reboot cleanly). It could also be a file locking issue, though I would expect a different error message in that case. To see what processes are actively usng those files you can run lsof | grep locale. share|improve this answer edited Feb 21 '10 at 20:42 answered Feb 21 '10 at 16:56 David Spillett 20.2k3454 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote Four hours later I found the solution to my problem: I rebooted the PC and in the boot menu I started an instance of the Ubuntu Recovery menu-item. I opened a terminal session as root and was able to delete the direcory with the command: rmdir ".gvfs" No error message came back. I
