Something went wrong with my external HD (Ubuntu can't mount it) up vote 6 down vote favorite 2 Here is my output from the fdisk command: sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk input/output error ubuntu identifier: 0x00043809 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 973105151 486551552 83 Linux /dev/sda2 973107198 976771071 1831937 5 Extended /dev/sda5 973107200 976771071 1831936 82 Linux swap / Solaris Disk /dev/sdb: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x5387f1b4 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 2048 625140399 312569176 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT From my limited knowledge of Ubuntu--I'm guessing my external is being detected by my OS, but it's not being mounted. Backstory: I was trying to use an ISO file that I had on my external using AcetoneISO--then everything froze up. I forced a shut down/reboot, then when I rebooted, my HD wouldn't mount. It didn't even give me an error message, it just didn't work. What's up? Help? EDIT: @Alaa: I was just about to add this info. I have just tried manually mounting my drive, and this is the output: $ sudo mkdir /media/TOSHIBA_EXT $ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/TOSHIBA_EXT ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read $MFTMirr: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, o

All works fine except that http://askubuntu.com/questions/74105/how-do-you-repair-an-input-output-error-in-an-ntfs-partition the main HD where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the error message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details Is it necessarily a hardware problem? If not, is there a way to repair the HD from Ubuntu? windows ntfs share|improve this question edited May 15 at 19:06 muru 69.1k12125176 asked Oct 31 '11 at 15:13 Calixte 68461528 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 17 down vote accepted chkdsk /R is a pretty important command when things get hairy with NTFS. After cleaning out all the games and kid stuff and worthless Dell software it is now trimmed down to about 6.4GB of used space (pagefile input output error set to 0). I would like to use Ghost (the old DOS variety) to make the image (on external USB HDD) because it compresses the image and will restore to the new XP partition which will be between 8GB & 15GB. I have tried several times (including creating a new Ghost floppy in case the first one was corrupt) and keep getting the error messages: NTFS Error! Error reading FILE_VOLUME MFT record NTFS Error! Error reading FILE_LOG MFT record Internal error: 25030 (this one is a Ghost error) ABORT: 25030, NTFSGetClusterCount() failed After the first time, I ran the XP version of CHKDSK /F and it found a lot of errors. Since then I have run CHKDSK /F a few more times and also NTFSCHK and these have not found any more errors. I'm using Image for Dos now (which will also compress the image) with USB 2.0 (it says it needs about 6 hours!). The big problem is that IfD will want to restore to a volume that is at least as big as where the last used sector lies on the physical HDD. According to the Defrag Analyzer in XP this is almost the whole 40GB. IfD does have a button ("Compress") to congregate the used sectors at the beginning of the partition, but a warning pops-up telling me I need to have a backup in case something goes wrong, so in

What tool to fix? up vote 1 down vote favorite I used Avira Rescue Disk (Ubuntu 12.04) to access a broken NTFS boot partition. Windows 7 fails to mount it: it displays a bluescreen ("UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME") and restarts immediately. With the Rescue Disk I could backup the most important data (Ubuntu does not fail on mounting). Now I tried gparted to fix the partition. To analyse the partition, gparted runs a scanning-only ntfsresize first. A similar (= non-writing) but manual run of ntfsresize -info --force /dev/sda3 gives: ntfsresize v2012.1.15AR.1 (libntfs-3g) Device name : /dev/sda3 NTFS volume version: 3.1 Cluster size : 4096 bytes Current volume size: 484336226816 bytes (484337 MB) Current device size: 484336230400 bytes (484337 MB) Checking for bad sectors ...
