I would copy/clone the the whole partition (using eg. dd) just to make data safe (don't forget to unmount the partition first). Then you can experiment with one of the copies to recover the files and fix filesystem; try to run fsck, or this might help as well: http://www.cgsecurity.org/ (photorec, testdisk) http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2009-11/msg02355.html Login or register to post comments #7 augustin - 05/06/2010 - 06:17 with USB unless you have gone out of your way to write another file system over the one you have then you

Run fsck -y, let it complete, and then you should be ok (most of the time). share|improve this answer answered Oct 29 '11 at 16:30 Employed Russian 22612 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Watch out with performing fsck on a failing drive. If it's an hardware issue, better first make an image of what is still readable with something like ddrescue (see that you get the GNU one, it's the better of the
2009, 10:33 AMI just recently gave up on my Win OS and moved on to greener pastures in he for of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) The migration of data went well and all is fine until I https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1192442.html tried to access all the files I have backed up into a mobile Hardisk.... I cannot https://forums.techguy.org/threads/attempting-to-recover-harddrive-files-using-ubuntu.866693/ see all my files in Nautilus. Running fdisk -lu, I can see the occupied disk space which should mean all my files are still there... I used sudo bash and CD to the drive an run an ls, again all my files are there. Why can't I access my files in nautilus.... I can't even see them.... Really need help on this because output error I've tried everything my noobie brain knows... Thanks. thegreenblobJune 20th, 2009, 10:41 AMAre they hidden files? If so you should be able to see them by pressing Ctrl+H in nautilus. bochenghuJune 20th, 2009, 10:50 AMThanks for the speedy reply man~ Tried your Ctrl+H in nautilus, screen flicker for a while then back to nothing. thegreenblobJune 20th, 2009, 11:03 AMSo you can see the files in the terminal when you use "ls" using sudo? If so probably a permissions problem. reading directory . Might be able to fix that with: sudo chown yourusername /location/to/drive/* That should make it so all the files are "yours". If that doesn't work I suppose you could run nautilus as root. gksudo nautilus To get the files off. bochenghuJune 20th, 2009, 11:33 AMWow~ A heartfelt thanks for the solutions. sadly it didn't work again. I entered the commands as listed with no errors I used the chown command but there was no output on screen, when I ran the normal Nautilus and the gksudo nautilus, it still shows nothing. I then ran sudo bash, went into the drive and did another ls, the output is: xxx@xxx-desktop:~$ sudo chown xxx /media/Mobile xxx@xxx-desktop:~$ cd /media/Mobile xxx@xxx-desktop:/media/Mobile$ ls ls: cannot access From D Drive: Input/output error autorun.inf From D Drive $RECYCLE.BIN Backup System Volume Information ccsetup212.exe PhotoZ RECYCLER Backup02 untitled folder xxx@xxx-desktop:/media/Mobile$ All the files listed, neither the regular nor the elevated rights nautilus can see the files.... ddrichardsonJune 20th, 2009, 11:37 AMWhen you say you can't see your files, is the drive listed in Nautilus? bochenghuJune 20th, 2009, 11:42 AMYes, it's listed. I can write to it and read the newly written data. Just that files from my old computer cannot be seen. All the files and folders listed by ls cannot be seen by nautilus. The drive is in NTFS format by the way, but I did check to see if ntfs-3g was installed.

I was referred here by joeten on the Windows forum. Please go here, http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/866317-startup-error-code-stop-c000021a.html#post6966906 for my original post. Here's the story, I have been having a lot of trouble with my girlfriend's computer after it crashed while I was attempting to remove a virus. Now, after starting the computer, Windows fails to load and I get a blue screen with error code STOP: c000021a. Joeten recommended that I use Ubuntu to attempt to recover some important files from the harddrive before I refomatted the drive. He sent me detailed instructions, however I am having difficulty on one step. Here is what I wrote on the other thread: I've been following the instructions you linked me to and unfortunately, I have a problem. When I go to the computer window in Ubuntu there is no reference to the computer's hard drive. The only choices are: -Cd Drive -MEDIADIRECT -OS -Filesystem From there I went to the terminal and attempted to mount the drive. I used the "fdisk -l" command to show the list of drives. I believe it is telling me that /dev/sda3 is my drive as it is the one with the most data on it. When I run the command to mount the drive I get the following message: "ntfs attr pread i: ntfs pread failed: input/output error. Failed to read NTFS Bitmap: Input/output error. SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important!
