buggy Windows Vista installation with Ubuntu. All works fine except that the main HD where I had all my files are now inaccessible. Here is the error message I get: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of ubuntu input output error external hard drive the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Unfortunately I don't know of a Linux tool that comes close to covering everything it does. In short, to run it, you're going to need some sort of Windows recovery disk. If you don't have one to hand, there's an ISO offered up in a thread on another set of support forums (see the first answer). There are tools like ntfsfix (part of the ntfsprogs package) that can do surface checks on NTFS disks but they don't tend to be able to fix the drives. share|improve this answer answered Oct 31 '11 at 15:24 Oli♦ 172k56435646 3 You could install VirtualBox and an XP on it. Prevent the drive mounting in fstab, (if USB mount: add the USB filter in VBox so that XP sees the "raw" USB drive), mount the drive on XP and run chkdsk on it. –ringø Jan

After creation it worked fine and i output error ubuntu put some files in it, but the day after i get the following error: me@mymachine:/media/disk1$ ls -l foo ls: cannot access foo: Input/output error me@mymachine:/media/disk1$ ls -l ls: cannot access foo: Input/output error total 101 d????????? ? ? ? ? ? foo (+ a succesful listing of other files and directories) I get the Input/output error no matter what i try to do to the directory (rm, mv, cd, etc.), and no matter which privileges i have. I read some threads suggesting that it is a hardware problem. I tried running ntfsfix on the partition: me@mymachine:~$ sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda3 Mounting volume... OK Processing of $MFT and $MFTMirr completed successfully. NTFS volume version is 3.1. NTFS partition /dev/sda3 was processed successfully. I have also run the short and the long SMART test from the disk utility, resulting in the overall assessment: Disk is healthy. It would be nice to know how to recover the data in the directory, but i have backup so that part is not crucial. I could also reformat the whole drive to ext4, which I eventually would have done in any case. Or i could just ignore the defective folder which does not harm anyone. However if this problem is the first warning of a failing drive, I would rather get a new drive now, before some more important data suddenly disappear. My question is now, what course of action i should take. Is there any other diagno
