However any attempt to write to the tape drive (via either flexbackup or just tar) results in "/dev/st0: Input/output error" The machine seems to recognise the drive ( HP Storageworks Ultrium 448 ) and that there's a tape in it and "mt status" seems to work... "mt -f /dev/st0 rewind" or "erase" throw no errors... Code: root@stor001:/# mt status SCSI 2 tape drive: File number=0, block number=0, partition=0. Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x42 (LTO-2). Soft error count since last status=0 General status bits on (41010000): BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN root@stor001:/# cat /proc/scsi/scsi Attached devices: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 Vendor: HL-DT-ST Model: DVDRAM GSA-4084N Rev: KS02 Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05 Host: scsi2 Channel: 00 Id: 03 Lun: 00 Vendor: HP Model: Ultrium 2-SCSI Rev: S65D Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03 "tell" does however Code: root@stor001:/# mt -f /dev/st0 tell /dev/st0: Input/output error Based on a forum post I found elsewhere, I tried: Code: root@stor001:/# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/
2003 The system doesn't recognize the tape drive as online. IM_REP_EN should be preceded by ONLINE (at least mine is). If it's external, are you sure it's terminated? Maybe a bad cable. I would have thought this would be due to a powered off external drive, but it shows up in /proc....odd. <

(i dont have a modules.conf in my machine) Anyway after running that command i am able to use "mt" commands to access the device.. I am able to copy data into the device using the "cpio" command.. but I am not able to copy data into the device using the "tar" command It gives me input / output error. I know that cpio and tar uses different formatting. tar used 10240 bytes as block size (default) is what i read from man page. The block size of the tape drive when no tape is present is 0 bytes when tape is present is 512 bytes So i thought of changing the block size of the tape drive to 0 ( variable block size) using the Code: mt setblk 0 or mt -f /dev/st0 setblk 0 but this command was giving me the same error /dev/st0 : Input/Output error I tried writing a program thereby calling ioctl 's to set the block size but i am getting the same error.. Code: struct mtop magtape_ops; struct mtget m

All of a sudden, I'm getting backup failures caused by tape rewind issues: mount.c:226 Couldn't rewind device /dev/nst0 ERR=dev.c:374 Rewind error on /dev/nst0 ERR=Input/output error. This is with bacula version 1.32b. Now, this did work previously, but I'm curious--I specified the non-rewinding device. Should this be the rewinding device instead? Chris If you are running on a FreeBSD system, then it is most likely your autochanger needs to be better adapted -- using the generic scsi control device invalidates the real drive during the operation. You will need to ask a FreeBSD scsi expert what is going on. If that is not your case, I have no idea what is going on. Specifying the non-rewinding device is fine. You can try the rewinding device, but I doubt it will make any difference. Thu Nov 13, 2003 5:21 pm Guest Tape rewind problem... Sorry. Running on a RedHat 9 Linux system, using the sg device. The only difference lately is: This is an AIT-2 drive. We were running with 35 GB tapes and we upgraded to 50 GB tapes. That shouldn't matter, though. I will try with the rewinding device rather than the non-rewinding device. Chris Kern Sibbald wrote: On Thu, 2003-11-13 at 17:10, Chris Dollmont wr
