Fdisk Unable To Open /dev/sdb
and so I installed a WD 250GB 5400RPM SATA HD myself but when trying to erase it I get a input/output error and I cannot seem to partition it. When I try to reinstall my original Tiger OS X the 'select a destination' step is blank and there is nothing to select. I'm not worried about the old HD as I had mostly everything backed up dev sdb input output error - I just want to get this new HD up and running and get my MacBook fixed! It installed perfectly but one day i was not able to boot to kubuntu. so i tried to install it again but got the error "INPUT OUTPUT ERROR ON READ /DEV/SDA" and installer is not detecting windows partitions I have 120G western digital wdc wd1200bevs-22rst0 hard drive. I have tried following commands 1) fdisk -l this doesn't detect my hard drive 2) sfdisk -l read error. cannot read sector 0 3) Gparted live cd input output error 4) test disk (gparted live cd) read error 5) test disk(windows version) no error detected 6) smartmontools completly passed.no error detected 7) windows is saying that hard drive is healthy 8) even the manufacture's life diagnostic tool says that hard drive is healthy 9) tried to burn the cds at slowest speed and even with usb stick . no luck 10) completely wiped the hard drive 11) tried the alternate cd but still no luck 12) used 'fsck' but still failed I have tried ubuntu, xubuntu and kubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 but no luck I have tried the above things and still no succes . if anyone can help? thanks in advance Last edited by Manuj19; June 9th, 2011 at 04:59 PM. Its a late 2009 model Macbook running 10.5.8 (thats what version disk utility is). Tried going to disk utility on CD boot: 1. language input output error 2. disk utility 3. partition 1, GUID 4. then quit disk utility and continue....but no drive appears to select installation destination......please help and thanks in advance! Was the 500GB hard drive new? What was the reason for fitting the 500GB drive, replacing a failed hard drive or an upgrade? Were you careful with the drive flex cable, avoiding pulling it against where it's held by 2 small screws? Knowing the answers to the above may help determine how to resolve your problem. My Setup I had some different troubles to play around if during installation, as I have a setup with a fully encrypted root. Plus, there were issues with the UEFI and GPT, especially to get everything work with Windows. As the install was a long time ago, I don't remember any details. On my Ubuntu harddrive, I have three main partitions: /dev/sda1: fat32, boot flag.
