I've had no problems until yesterday when this began : Every time the unit is turned on I see "Hello" on the display screen, shortly followed by "U61". The operating instructions say error code u61 "U61: There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not broken. Wait until the message disappears." But in my case, after a brief period of "sound blips" I get this message on the TV screen : "Self check failed. Press ENTER, then the unit will open the tray and power off automatically. If this message appears frequently, please refer to the Product Service section in the operating instructions." I've tried unplugging the recorder and after several minutes replugging - doesn't help. The Panasonic web site says that to get approved Panasonic service I would need to go 177 miles to Chicago (I live in Indianapolis). Has anyone owning this or similar model had this trouble? Is it fixable? One year and two months is a very short lifetime for a DVD recorder that has been only lightly used, and never abused. it is environmental and dust from my home has caused the problem, (how insulting) or the type of discs I use, I don't believe either reason, I believe this particular model has a defect which activates this U61 error code for no apparent reason. I looked on the web and it seems this problem is quite common. I've also heard from another expert, (second opinion) that there are three causes for this, the driver, software or power supply problem, he had not heard of household dust being the culprit. I've had this recorder for nearly a year from brand new. Interseted to hear from anyone who's had this problem and how it was fixed, how did Panasonic or the retailer responded to you in fixing the problem, and if the problem was fixed has it reacurred again. Thanks. geek_chrisp24, Jul 1, 3:57 pm Take it inlet Panasonic assess it and go from there. geek_biker_69, Jul 1, 6:23 pm The good old u61 error Its common. Its a firmware issue that appears after a while. Panasonic will usually flash the firmware. Backup any data on the HDD. Get it dealt to while it is still in warranty. geek_outlaw2, Jul 1, 8:49 pm What discs do you use ?,I had this problem with TDK discs but when I went back to Panasonic the problem went away and hasn,t returned (touch wood) geek_falsin, Jul 1, 9:48 pm Re3 it doesn't have a hdd;) i own one aswell....no issues with it as yet though and well out of warranty:) geek_dino7, Jul 1, 10:10 pm There were 3 models of pana dvd recorders that have this issue. The ES15 and the 160gb HDD & 250GB HDD models from the same generation. geek_outlaw2, Jul 2, 9:32 pm Thanks outlaw2 I also have the 160gb HDD as well, and that has already been serviced under warranty due to it couldn't read/playback the Panasonic RAm discs, going ok now touch wood. I have two ES15 and my first one had the same U61 error within 10 mths and was fixed by an outside tech and it was a firmware problem. I've research the ES15 on the web and it appears there are issues with the U61 error code...... geek_chrisp24, Jul 5, 2:50 pm Cont...from My problem is they are only repaired at Panasonic if still under warranty and their tech has been really mean and nasty to me, saying my research results are nonsense and I don't know what I'm talking about and is blaming me for the problem. I honestly don't trust this tech to sufficiently fix my dvd recorder. I'm going to lay a complaint with the Panasonic CEO (1) their very rude tech (2) come clean and admit there is a problem with the ES15's and
