I didn't have any bad experiences until last night (11/6/05) when, while watching a dvd, it froze then quit reading discs - It would at first try to read the disc, but now doesn't, just immediately says "NO DISC" or "----". It has a 5 disc changer but it won't read a disc (dvd or music cd) in any "slot". It also gets very hot (to the point you can't touch it for more than about 5 - 10 seconds). The unit sits on top of our entertainment center, so it gets proper ventilation. I contacted Panasonic awhile back about this and they told me that it was normal and that the cooling fan is thermastat controlled. Panasonic customer service was rude, on hold for 38 minutes for the 4th call before I just gave up. Tried to contact them via email but no response and no help with this problem. We don't constantly use the dvd/cd player. It's main use is on the weekend to watch a couple of dvds, sometimes once or twice during the week.
a year and a half ago, we bought a panasonic SC-HT75 5-disc dvd player and for the most part we've been really happy with it. But last night, my wife was watching a 2-disc movie; the player finished playing the first disc but when it moved to the 2nd, the player flashed up an error code of DVD H01 and wouldn't load the disk. Since then, the player won't load a disk from any slot. You put in a disc, it whirs 4 times (sounding like a faint descending whistle), flashes up DVD H01 and then NO DISC. Does the same with all discs no matter what. Powering down and back up doesn't fix it. I looked on the panasonic site and in the manual, but haven't found what the error codes mean. Is the unit totally hosed? Is it worth trying to repair? It would be a http://www.doityourself.com/forum/home-entertainment-center-tvs-stereos-vcrs-dvds-bluray-media-players/239797-panasonic-sc-ht75-home-theatre-reads-no-disc.html shame to have to replace it after only a year and a half. It was also hard to find a multi-disc player that fit in the stereo cabinet that we have. I appreciate any advice. The original parts warranty is probably one year, but it's not reasonable that an expensive part like the laser pickup (the likely culprit here) should go out so soon. Make your case, get a file or reference number, and get it to an authorized servicer. With luck you'll only pay the labor charges. Manufacturers I deal with, including Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer, and Yamaha all have procedures to deal w

message referring to no disc being in the system. This can be infuriating because you can see that there is a disc, however, the CD / DVD player cannot. Every time the tray closes, the laser beam fires two long bursts of laser light, and the focusing platform moves up and down attempting to focus the beam. This is the time when it is looking for a disc. If the laser has failed, then it will not be able to detect a CD and therefore the error message appears. I normally do two things when this happens. I normally clean the lens just in case there is dust on it obstructing the laser path. If cleaning the lens does not solve the problem then I make sure the laser is working. Obviously one should never look directly into the laser unit, you would have to be plain stupid if you did that. The laser light is bright enough that one can see the diffused red light from a distance obliquely. A piece of paper the size of a standard CD within the tray can also help, because when the tray closes, one can see the diffused red light on the paper. It is usually bright enough and visible from the other side of the paper. If there is no red light, then the laser has failed. Back in the 1990s, I used to fix many of these and it was always either the spindle motor or the laser that failed. These two components are in constant use and wear out the most. Laser diodes do not last forever, especially on the early players manufactured in the 1980s. It would be very surprising to find a player still working from that era. Most of those units used cheap motors where the brushes wore out within a few years. Moreover, if that did not fail, then the laser surely would. The laser diode manufacturing process was not as refined either, and those diodes had a short finite life to them. Most of those early CD players would be hard to find as they often ended up in landfill. I have come across many high-end players of recent time that use the same cheap mass produced drive mechanisms. Moreover, most of those failed within a few years as well. This is a
