The message suggests that another process using the serial port, it could be serial port com1 not found arduino as simple as need to close and reopen your terminal emulator. –dlu Nov 26 '15 at 20:01 Im using windows 8.1, and im connecting to the serial port via usb. –M. Shaaban Nov 26 '15 at 20:04 How are you connecting to the serial port (what software are you using to received the serial data)? I don't do much with Windows, but I think the problem that you're having is that your terminal emulator is expecting to see the data on your COM1 port but you're actually transmitting the data over USB and a virtual serial port. The serial monitor in the Arduino IDE picks up the serial port from the setting in the menu Tools > Port (which is also used for your upload), but other programs will need it to be explicitly set. –dlu Nov 26 '15 at 20:09 the software is built in the arduino IDE. I edited the post the code is not uploading, only compiling. –M. Shaaban Nov 26 '15 at 20:18 COM1 is usually reserved for the built in serial port in the computer. Your USB serial port is more likely going to be COM3 or COM11, or even COM23 rather than COM1. Make absolutely sure you have the right COM port selected, and that you have installed the right serial drivers for your board. –Majenko Nov 26 '15 at 20:19 | show 3 more comments 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote I've got an idea. If Com3 is in use, so is Com1. Select Com2 or Com4 for hotsynch or disable the modem, preferably in BIOS, if it is not being used. The Com port for Hotsynch in in the setup options when it is running in the taskbar. Q henry 4 July 2005 20:23:17 Archived from groups: alt.sys.pc-clone.dell (More info?) I tested the cable and serial port com1 the pump under linux (a gentoo derivative), where it worked perfectly, albeit as root. Now i have to use the code on a WinXP machine, where i always get an "Access denied" error when trying to open the port (i adjusted the parameters to COMxx instead of ttySxx, the port is found). I tried the serial port of the computer, as well as a USB2Serial adapter. I heard that WinXP was quite restrictive when it comes to trying to address some port with self written code. Is there a simpler workaround for this problem than installing linux? # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- import sys import time import serial from threading import Thread """ usage: cmdCapture workDirectory pictureTime pressureTime """ print 'successful import is successful' workDir=sys.argv[1] pressureThresh=float(sys.argv[3]) class doCapture(Thread): def __init__ (self, workDir, pressureThresh): Thread.__init__(self) self.workDir=workDir self.pressureThresh=pressureThresh self.pressureTimer=0 -> here i set the serial port self.ser=serial.Serial(port='\\.\COM1', baudrate=9600, bytesize=serial.EIGHTBITS, parity=serial.PARITY_NONE, stopbits=serial.STOPBITS_ONE, timeout=1) -> here the error happens self.ser.open() def getPressure(self): self.ser.write('PR') return self.ser.read(size=8), timer.timer() def run(self): self.pressureTimer=time.timer() w
all the ports to see if there is a GPS attached. You can use our GpsPortChecker program to see if it can find your GPS. If you are using a USB to Serial port converter or a plug-in card type GPS (compact flash) or a Bluetooth GPS a virtual com port will be created. You must know the number of the port which is created, if you do not the GpsPortChecker program mentioned above may help locate the port number used. Make sure you do not have any other programs also trying to use the COM port. These may include FAX programs, programs which interface to Palm Pilots and other PDA's, terminal type programs (e.g. Hyperterminal). If you have been using a DOS terminal program to read the output from the GPS you must not only exit the terminal program but may also have to completely exit the DOS window to release the COM port. If you get the error from OziExplorer "Error Opening Com Port" this means the port is in use by another program or does not exist. Note that OziExplorer has not yet attempted to communicate with the GPS, it does this only after it has successfully opened the COM port. It is possible to lock up the communication port on the GPS, so it is advisable to turn the GPS off and on when attempting to establish communication to reset the port. Com Port and GPS won't communicate and I have used a Palm Pilot If you have a Palm Pilot and you have communication problems, ensure that the "Hot Sync" is only active when the Palm Pilot is connected. You will need to check the settings for the "Hot Sync" program, and make the Hot Sync feature to only run when the Palm Pilot is running, and not run all the time. Adjusting this setting will free up the COM port. While the Palm Pilot has control of the COM port, you will not be able to establish communication. Serial Port Drivers The Serial Port Driver used for communication with the GPS is selectable - Driver1 or Driver2. (Driver2 is the default). The COM page of OziExplorer Configuration has the option to change driver. If you are having trouble communication with your GPS, try the other driver. (Most GPS's will work with either driver, in this case we recommend using Driver2). Mouse Cursor Jumps
