Overrun Error trabertr Member 07-06-2011 11:40 AM Options Mark as New Bookmark Subscribe Subscribe to RSS Feed Highlight Print Email to a Friend Report to a Moderator I am trying to develop a real time plotter to look at ions as the hit an anode which then sends an electrical signal to the computer. The data comes in through a serial port how serial port works with a baud rate of 115200, no parity or flow control, 1 stop bit, no handshaking. The rates in which I am sampling at are about 200 kHz. I'd like to have the program save, and plot a histogram of the the data as it comes in. I've been using terra-term to collect data and it has had no problems keeping up. I am currently concerned at this point if it is even possible to use the VISA application at the rate that I would like due to the error: "VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF006C) An overrun error occurred during transfer. A character was not read from the hardware before the next character arrived." Are there any suggestions on how to get around this? I am not quite sure how to setup a temporary buffer or something so that program doesn't crash... I've attached the file I have been using. I am not very saavy with LabView so hopefully there is something obvious going on that I have just missed. Thanks a lot! Solved! Go to Solution. Real_time_serial_630.vi 57 KB 0

I only get this error on Win98 and the latest version of LV (7.0) and VISA (3.01). Does anyone know what exactly causes this error? The help on the error is not very detailed. I tried the same program on a Win2000 PC and it works without any problems. I also tried another VISA communication program on the Win98 PC and the same error occurs. Thanks in advance,Michael 0 Kudos Message 1 of 22 (8,681 Views) Reply 0 Kudos Re: Overrun error (-1073807252) occurs after several minutes Ray K Active Participant 11-07-2003 03:06 PM Options Mark as New Bookmark Subscribe Subscribe to RSS Feed Highlight Print Email to a Friend Report to a Moderator This is a buffer overflow error. You are probabaly not reading from the serial port fast enough. Increasing the buffer size will only delay the problem because a bigger buffer will still eventually overflow (the buffer might overflow after 6 min and not 3 min). The difference between the computers may be that th

The H/W is sending 1600 bytes after every 10ms.I am using Event Structure(timeout event) to check whether 1600 bytes are at port serial port receive or not. Timeout is set to 1ms. i even tried with 0ms.Baud Rate = 3000000.but the program is giving Buffer Overrun problem when i am trying to read data using VISA Read.I have set the buffer size to 64000 but with no success. The problem still seems to persist.ihaveplayed around withReceivebuffer of COM Port in device manager. i tried all the values from 64 to 1600, again with no success.every time i run the program i get an error stating,"A character was not read from the H/W before the next char arrived" at VISA Read Function.and i am not doing anyother processing other than Reading data from the Port in the timeout event. What could be the problem? Thanks,Ritesh 0 Kudos Message 1 of 9 (2,107 Views) Reply 0 Kudos Re: Visa Read Overrun Problem RavensFan Knight of NI 04-07-2009 10:01 AM Options Mark as New Bookmark Subscribe Subscribe to RSS Feed Highlight Print Email to a Friend Report to a Moderator How are you able to set a Serial port to have a baud rate of 3 mill
