The issue seems to be that the priveleges does not allow a standard user to install a plugin. Hope this helps others that sturggle with this issue chick May 5, 2007 I get the same error on windows xp. I have removed my status code mcafee antivirus and removed all other firefox addons, still same problem chickmarkley May 7, 2007 Firefox 1.5 and later onlyI had the exact same problem, on windows xp, I got passed it after the followingturning off macafeeremoving firebug add-on (not sure if this mattered)doing the following from the installation docsThis will fix a number of extension issues [7][8]. Exit Firefox completely, then open your Firefox profile folder and delete these three files: extensions.ini extensions.cache extensions.rdf The files http error codes will be regenerated. azad22free May 8, 2007 I cannot find extensions.ini extensions.cache extensions.rdf in the firefox. where are them? csuazo April 26, 2008 Indeed it works when installed as root, but for that i need to log firefox as root every time. If i ever login as common user, zotero is not installed. Is it absolutely necesary to log firefox as root? How, do I get it installed in firefox as a common user? quickstep April 30, 2008 I had a similar problem with Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and Firefox 2.0.0.14 First I had installed Firefox 3beta which is the default for (K)Ubuntu 8.04. Zotero does not work with it in the moment. So, I removed Firefox 3b again and installed Firefox 2.0.0.14. However, your ~/.mozilla folder where the firefox settings are saved is sensibly not removed. And there seem to be some incompatibilities between Firefox 3 and 2 here. My advice: if you have any important files like your bookmarks in the ~/.mozilla directory back them up. Then remove Firefox 3b, delete ~/.mozilla and finally install Firefox 2.x.y.z And now give Zotero a try again. In my case it worked. biomat July 8, 2008 Thanks! After unsuccessfully trying various things the deleting of ~/.mozilla (sudo rm -r ~/.mozilla) finally did the trick, and I was able to install painlessly the google toolbar and other google
very common to Mozilla Firefox users. Many times when you try to install a new extension or theme in Firefox, you get following error message: Unexpected Installation Error -203 Even existing add-ons also don't work. Its a very annoying problem and after getting a few e-mails asking for solution of this problem, today I decided to write a small tutorial to fix it. So here we start the tutorial: METHOD A: First make sure you are not using Zone Alarm or CA firewalls as both these firewalls are known to cause this problem. If you are using any of them, disable it by using its system tray icon and then try to install the extension or theme. Now it should install without any problem. After the installation, you can again enable the firewall. METHOD B: Most of the times, this problem occurs when you update the Firefox version installed in your system. If you have recently updated Firefox version, then delete following 3 files from your Mozilla Firefox Profiles folder: extensions.ini extensions.cache extensions.rdf These files will be re-created automatically when you start Firefox next time and your problem will be fixed. NOTE: To find the location of Profiles folder, visit following link: All About Mozilla Firefox Profile Folder and Configuration Files METHOD C: If the above solution doesn't work, then its a problem of corrupt profile folder. Sometimes your existing Firefox profile folder gets corrupted and causes this problem. You'll need to create a new default profile to fix this problem. But it might remove all your installed add-ons. 1. Open Firefox Profiles folder as mentioned in the link given in METHOD B. Don't go to the "xxxxxxxx.default" folder, go one folder back and you'll see a file "profiles.ini" in the same folder where "Profiles" directory exists. Either rename or delete the "profiles.ini" file. 2. Now double-click on "Profiles" folder and delete "xxxxxxxx.default" folder. Make sure to take its backup if you want to save your bookmarks, cookies and passwords later. 3. Now run Firefox again and it'll re-create the default profile folder and will work like you installed it for the first time. It'll fix the problem. PS: To restore your bookmarks, cookies and passwords copy "bookmarks.html", "cookies.txt", "history.dat", "key3.db" and "signons2.txt" files from the backed-up profile folder to newly created profile folder. Firefox 3 users will need to copy "cookies.sqlite", "places.sqlite", "key3.db" and "signons3.txt" files as Firefox 3 uses these new files instead of those old files.
