I have tried pressing f8, repair your computer http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/system-restore-failed-to-extract-the-file-c-from/0cb1e078-fbd2-4aad-97b6-4635a2509b4f then system restore however I keep getting the 0x8000ffff error. I have tried a few different restore points but still the same. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Matt. Unfortunately 0x8000fff is one of those errors with no defined roots, it crops up for http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/252794-system-will-not-restore-error-0x8000ffff.html all kinds of reasons and in all kinds of situations; most users never find what the actual problem was even once they've fixed it. I've just been frantically reading about this to try and find an easy solution but it seems there isn't one that I can copy/paste which will definitely sort it for you. All I can do is list some of the most common fixes. If you have the original Windows 7 disc (or a Startup Repair disc) then of course the first thing you can do is use this. Startup Repair Alternatively you could attempt starting in safe mode, and then run system restore. Safe Mode Last but not least (and far from easiest) is to image your system drive, which I've read can help two thirds of people afflicted with this problem (that information came from only one source and I'm not wholly ready to believe it). I'll be honest, I've done a system image but the following tutorial is comprehensive. System Image Recovery Note: It is an involved process and will take some time (s'why I've never done it!), as well as getting used to some things you've never done on a computer before. Hope this helps. Over the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing unexplained shut downs in Windows 7 on my Alienware M-9700 portable desktop. Before yesterday I was able to just hit the start button & it would reboot without trouble so I really didn't give it much thought at the time. Then yesterday it happened again as I was visiting a website I had visited many times in the past without issue. At the same time I was online, I was running Avi Recomp, an AVI file compressor in the background. I didn't give it much thought until after I pressed the start button & as Win 7 was in the process of booting up the system shut down and the computer turned itself off. I tried a number of times to get it to reboot in normal mode with success. I ended up pressing F8 so I could go restart Win 7 in safe mode. No problem with that at all. Once there I was able to run Win 7 in safe mode with internet access, I ran Spybot, AdAware & AVG 9 to make sure that I didn't have any bugs, bots or malware on my system. All reported a clean system. I then ran Tweak

Report • #2 Fingers December 30, 2011 at 15:16:46 1- Repeat and try an older restore point (you might need to check off 'show more restore points').2- Use Windows 7 Repair Disk (you should have made this when the machine was new) to initiate the System Restore, it will use the same restore points on your machine but it does not use the restore 'engine' that may be having the trouble. If you did not make the repair disk, you can make one from any other Windows 7 machine as long as it is of the same type (32bit or 64bit, except maybe Starter). You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
