have been installing and testing several software products and my laptop is starting to get flaky. It has slowed down and no longer goes into standby when closing the lid. In my experience, the easiest fix for

this type of problem is to use Microsoft's System Restore. Simply pick a restore point an unspecified error occurred during system restore 0x81000204 from before the testing and let System Restore do it's magic. I started System Restore, picked a restore point and an unspecified error occurred during system restore 0x800700b7 sent it off to work – or so I thought. System Restore ran as it should, restarted the computer, but then displayed a dialog box explaining that System Restore did not finish what it set out to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_programs/unspecified-error-occured-during-system/1486eb9f-a2e4-4b96-aa84-e402e92e8b79 do. Amongst the rather not so helpful text in the dialog box, it said, “an unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x80071a90).” Humm…I guess this means that System Restore did not work. The message goes on the further suggest that I try other restore points - which I did. Lamentably, trying other restore points proved futile. I was soon to discovered that broken restore points were not the issue. System Restore can fail because some http://www.consideritfixed.com/2011/02/what-to-do-when-system-restore-fails.html software on your computer doesn't understand or respect System Restore. Common culprits are virus and malware protection products and other programs that are typically loaded to provide some type of background service. If there is any good news here it is that getting around these problems with System Restore is rather easy. Following, I offer 2 approaches that may help. Neither of these will destroy data that is on your computer. However, it goes without saying that you should always make a backup of your important data before you work on your computer. Run System Restore in Safe Mode Start Windows in safe mode. To run Windows in safe mode, turn on or restart your computer. When the splash screen from the PC’s manufacturer is displayed, hold down the F8 key. You will see a text based screen with several options appear that will look a lot like Figure 1 below. Using the up and down arrow keys, select the option “Safe Mode”, then hit the enter key on your keyboard. The computer will start Windows in safe mode which is Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If Windows loads normally, try repeating the instructions above. Sorry for the length, but the instructions say to be as detailed as possible. My System: I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC. MY PRIMARY PROBLEM: Inability to do a System Restore after multiple attempts using various restore points. First, I'm including what predicated my original attempt to do a system restore. While working on my computer on Sunday evening, some unspecified error sort of error message popped up, but it disappeared before I really saw what it said. However, the result was that when I next switched to IE8, it wasn't working properly. I seem to recall it saying something about "i.exe" in the original quick message that disappeared on me & later saw something about missing java script, but this was before I knew I had a big problem so I didn't actually note the details. FIRST FIX ATTEMPT: My first step at resolving this was my unspecified error occurred standard one - Shutdown & Restart. When I did this, I stepped away from the computer & came back to see that it was doing a disk check. As it does this from time to time for no apparent reason, I wasn't too worried. However, when the system came back online, there were several obvious issues including. My background picture changed back to some sort of default & all of my desktop icons were rearranged to sort of a standard setup. The items that normally show up when I hit the start button (I think this is the start menu) are gone. It's just blank white space & when I open a new program, it no longer shows up there like it used to.IE opened up to the original setup with the yahoo & hp toolbars & AOL as the homepage (none of which,I normally use.IE did keep my favorites & my favorites bar, but these items were rearranged alphabetically & keep going back to that regardless of where I move them.Microsoft Outlook 2007 acts like it was never set up. It wants me to start from scratch creating a new profile & does not include any of my huge number of email folders, contacts, or calendar items. The text just looks funny on certain applications. The text looks a bit "off" in Excel, Evernote, & other placesReceived an error message when opening Microsoft Word. "Compile error in hidden module: AZWizardModul"As near as I can tell, I haven't lost any of my files or applications, but if I a
