on a new SSD, so a clean install. Started installing all my programs etc. Everything seems to be explorer.exe unspecified error windows 10 running well, except on thing that is annoying... I have placed a few icons on the desktop via right clicking on the desktop, choosing personalize, then

themes, then desktop icon settings. I have placed, computer, user's files and control panel along with the already selected recycle bin. If I open the user's files icon placed via this method and I right click in the window and choose "customize this folder" unspecified error while copying file or folder I get an error box "Explorer.EXE "Unspecified error." On a similar note, if I manually create a shortcut from C:\Users onto the desktop I am able to choose customize this folder without any error. I was doing a little digging online and some people said this could be related to CCleaner? Just wondering if anyone else has this issue and or knows how to fix it? I really dont like errors like this, so may just reinstall everything again, but don't want to if there is a error 0x80004005 unspecified error possible fix. Thank you in advance. I will try to reproduce this error in a completely untouched virtual machine (aka without CCleaner) and will post the results! I can create and delete files and folders, and rename files, but renaming folders result in a "unspecified error". This happens regardless if the folder already existed or was recently created, and in both C: (my SSD) and E: (my HDD) drives. The console command ren still works, but renaming through any Explorer interface (Explorer window, Desktop, Open http://superuser.com/questions/966603/unspecified-error-when-renaming-folders-in-windows-10 File dialog,...) fails in the same way. It's not any antivirus (the only one I'm using is Windows Defender) and the problem persists with all user programs and their associated services stopped. I'm fairly sure I don't have any viruses either. This is genuine, clean Windows 10 install. I found other people with similar problems, but all of them were drive-specific, which this is not. windows windows-explorer windows-10 rename share|improve this question asked Sep 3 '15 at 0:33 BoppreH 18617 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote After upgrading to Windows 10, I am getting this and other disk errors all the time. Ghost folders, duplicate folders (with the same name but different contents), Files and Folders I can not rename or delete. My solution is I have a global folder called corrupted and I am able to MOVE all of these to the corrupted folder. Incidentally chkdisk does nothing. I am waiting for some tool to appear in the future to sort it out. I also notice that some of these are not actually files/folders or shortcuts but unix style links. share|improve this answer answered Sep 3 '15 at 1:10 Rohit Gupta 3393418 This happens to all folders, old and new, in all drives. Still waiting for an answer :/ –BoppreH Sep
