So I googled it a bit and did the manual fix MS http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-update/windows-update-error-80072efd/398546d2-6b6d-47a0-b075-82d815fa9a8f offers (no way I will use the FixIt thing - last time I tried it messed everything up like crazy), but so far no luck. Already went back to an image, but it appears the flaw was there too (still wondering how it found out about the current updates, but that's probably me missing something LOL) and the http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/windows-update-error-code-80070490 other images are quite a bit older. I don't really want to go there. Any help in resolving this very welcome. Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top Drizzle Posts: 2045 This post has been reported. SarahJames, Unless the Fixit solves the issue this is what MS says. :( :( ----------------------------------------------------------------- Code Error 80070490 checking for Windows Updates The error you are receiving occurs if there is corruption in the Component Based Servicing manifest. The only way to fix this is to do a "repair" install of Windows Vista. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044/en-us The "repair" (in-place upgrade) install will not effect your installed programs or data. Just make sure you are already logged into your computer when you start the install. Do not boot from the DVD. If the installation does not start automatically when you insert the DVD, run setup.exe f

After several re-installs, I ended up installing it on the Default Website with SSL and re-authorizing all of the update error 80072efd patches, fortunatly this wasn't too painful and it seems to have fixed a couple of other irritating patches that didn't install. I have recently moved WSUS from one server to a new server (disk space requirements). Unfortunatly it seems that there is a communications problem with new clients (XP SP2) connecting to the server. Group policy has been updated and old clients are using the new server, at least they are showing up in the new server console and being offered updates. I can use Internet Explorer to navigate to each of: http://update.cncs.co.uk/selfupdate/wuident.cab https://update.cncs.co.uk:8531/selfupdate/wuident.cab http://update.cncs.co.uk:8530/selfupdate/wuident.cab There are no relevant errors in the Event Logs and I can't use WsusDebugTool as it is an W2K3 x64 server, although I would appreciate it if anyone could point me towards an alternative. I have tried the following steps: Reset the WSUS Client (steps at the bottom of this post). Cleared the proxy configuration (proxycfg -d). Checked the WUAU registry entries (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate). Deleted the registry entires then reset the WSUS Client. Manually installed XP SP3 and .NET 2.0. Thanks. My company hadn't taken any updates since July of 2012, so rather than try to download the almost 10,000 updates, I set my WSUS server to direct the computers to download from Windows Updates. After all weekend of running the GPO to automatically download and install, reboot if user is logged on, check every 2 hours for updates, and if all else fails schedule the installs for this time, we were able to get a little more than half of the machines fully updated. After 5p I open the policy back up to basically run full throttle and during business hours I back it down to Prompt for Download and Notify. With that said. When I left yesterday I had 125 machines that still needed updates, 40 that had not yet reported, and 30 that were in an error state. Not to shabby for have over 1000 computers that hadn't received updates in almost two years........ My console looked gorgeous with all that green!!! Much to my dismay, I fired up the computer early this morning to make the policy changes, and there is absolutely no green showing in my console. Every thing is Error, Needs updates, or no status. I have spot checked machines and the machines themselves have no updates to install when you check for them. At a loss.
