is stuck on an update KB2229593 and I cannot seem to figure out how to get it to allow the install. When I try normal windows update it simply fails, when I try to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-update/error-code-0x8007f004-when-trying-to-install/ebda030a-fc00-44a8-8c0c-61f5a4fba2da install it manually it gives me an error, you do not have permission to install on server 2003 contact your system administrator. However I am an administrator on this server. My co-worker who is also an admin on the server gets the same error when he tries to install it. I have found a little info but mostly related to WXP. I disabled my security on the server but https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/6dd61dad-f333-408d-bdf1-d6c50cefe8a2/error-code-0x8007f004-when-trying-to-install-kb2286198-and-kb2229593-on-server-2003-r2?forum=sms still gets the same errors when trying to install. I would really like to get this installed so the server can stay up to date. Jan 31, 2006 at8:55AM Ahoy I've been trying to patch my server and Microsoft Update requests that it install Windows Installer 3.1 first which is fair enough. But after downloading it, it fails installation, here's the failed to install Event logs: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8007f004: Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. A quick bit of Googling showed this to be to do with permissions, so I tried it again by running under local Admin (it's a Member Server, not a DC), but that failed with the same error. Any ideas? Is this a tweak to the permissions that you need? nlondon Jan 31, 2006 at9:38AM You can also put the user you are running the update as in the Backup Operators built-in group. If you are logged in as that user when you make the group membership change you will have to log out and log back in for the change to take effect.
