Devenv.exe Error Visual Studio 2010
by: Problem with Visual Studio Crashing at Start-up Visual Studio Development > Visual Studio Setup and Installation Question 0 Sign in to vote Having a minor issue with VS 2008 crashing at start-up due to a bug in devenv.exe, "or any of the .dll's it has loaded." I say it is minor devenv.exe error visual studio 2012 because as soon as I load the debugger, I can continue to use visual studio as normal, but without the splash home screen. Still, its a nuisance and I've noticed that others have had very similar problems. Normally I use expression web 3 to work, but decided to try and enjoy VS studio for the first time - mind you I've had it installed for a few months - and after using it a few times, already its crashing. Have not un-installed or deleted, or installed any extensions etc. Tried collecting the memory dump, however that seems to fail. I receive an, "Input Error: Can not find script file 'c:\Debuggers\adplus.vbs" I'm pretty sure that I'm doing something wrong, but just don't know what. So I've included VS's Debugging output information: Output: 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.dll' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\advapi32.dll' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\rpcrt4.dll' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\gdi32.dll' 'devenv.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\System32\use

So, it is time to post an entry and get the knowledge base out on the web. Finding the Problem As usual, there are numerous things that can cause Visual Studio to crash. Here is a list (most likely incomplete): Visual Studio Bug Program error visual studio interfering with Visual Studio (usually a TSR) Driver causing issues with Visual Studio Corrupt Project file Corrupt User Profile Add-in problem in Visual Studio The first step, with any troubleshooting is to find the source of the problem. Fortunately, the Visual Studio team thought of this eventuality. Start Visual Studio like so (from a VS command prompt or a normal command prompt if you have the denvenv.exe path in your system path): devenv.exe /log This will log to the following folder: Visual Studio 2005:%USERPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftVisualStudio8.0ActivityLog.xml Visual Studio 2008:%USERPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftVisualStudio9.0ActivityLog.xml I don’t have a crash on this machine, but the file is a list of activities, including the loading of add ins. It looks like this:
save me a lot of time. When Microsoft distributed a hundred versions of Whidbey I gladly installed/uninstalled the latest version for checking its new features [along with sending a thousand error report to microsoft .. ]:-))… Unfortunately, after UNINSTALLING Whidbey from my machine I was unable to call "devenv.exe" to launch Visual Studio 2003 coz some of register keys have been changed when I installed Whidbey. So after a lot of effort I found out how to fix this and I am sharing it with you all Steps to perform ~ 1) Open registry editor (regedit.exe) 2) Go to this path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\ Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\devenv.exe" 3) Check the value of this key.. [ you will see this string " C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\ Common7\IDE\devenv.exe"] 4) Change this string to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\ Common7\IDE\devenv.exe"5) Done!! Check : Type "devenv" in run menu… Wow! Visual Studio 2003 is opening… Hope you will find it useful..
