Service Pack 1, you may see an error like the following (file name will vary): Error 1718.File D:WINDOWSInstaller50baad.msp was rejected by digital signature policy. Knowledge Base article 925336 had originally documented instructions using the Local Security Policy UI to work around this issue based on my previous blog post. While both Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are theoretically susceptible to this issue, to date it's only been observed on visual studio 2003 sp1 Windows Server 2003 – particularly on machines in an Active Directory domain. Investigations showed that when there's a conflict with domain policy, the UI instructions I documented won't set the registry value that SAFER – the software restriction policy API introduced in Windows XP – uses to determine whether to validate all files. To reliably workaround this issue, you should follow the instructions below. It is highly recommended that you remove your machine from any domain while installing Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 if you've encountered this problem. Otherwise a domain policy refresh could override the registry value during installation and block the installation. Leave your domain if belong to a domain and reboot Set the DWORD registry value PolicyScope to 1 in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSaferCodeIdentifiers registry key From an elevated command prompt, run "net stop msiserver" (without quotes) or simply reboot your machine Install the patch Reset the registry value from step 2 Re-join your domain if you previously belonged to a domain and reboot This can be automated rather easily, as shown in the following batch script example. rem It is recommended you leave a domain and reboot before running this scriptrem Backup the registry key before changing it to save the current valuesreg export HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicro

But the phrasing of that article is "File was rejected by digital signature policy" which is not exactly the error message I get https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f54f8ddb-aa7e-4c03-bddd-6b51dca9f424/error-1718-visual-studio-sp1-did-not-pass-the-digital-signature-check?forum=tfsadmin (show in Subject line). So, does that article address my issue? TIA, barkingdog P.S Why is this issue happeneing? Is it because I setup a single-server install of TFS, including SQL Server all on the same box? Also, make sure you have enough space on your system drive; I'd say at least 4 GB. AFAIK, MS did not publish space requirements for the SP1 installation; I suggest this minimum 4 GB requirement based on experience.-OmarV Tuesday, March 20, 2007 3:31 AM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote We've seen that error happen in one other situation -

2008 at 8:12 AM by Jeremy Jameson Comments: 2 Categories: Development Note This post originally appeared on my MSDN blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jjameson/archive/2008/02/08/installing-visual-studio-2005-sp1.aspx Since I no longer work for Microsoft, I have copied it here in case that blog ever goes away. Stepping into the "Wayback Machine" for a moment, I realized that I hinted about a problem with installing Visual Studio 2005 SP1, but I never got around to blogging about it in more detail. Unfortunately, I just got bit by this problem yet again this morning because I naively tried to use the vanilla Windows Update functionality after installing SQL Server 2005 on my freshly-rebuilt Windows Server 2003 machine. [Note: SQL Server 2005 uses the Visual Studio 2005 IDE as the shell for SQL Server Management Studio. Consequently, even though you may not have installed Visual Studio 2005, you need to install Visual Studio 2005 SP1 after installing SQL Server 2005. This is separate from any SQL Server service packs.] After double-clicking the "Golden Shield" (a.k.a. the Windows Update icon in the task tray), I was quickly informed that the attempt to install Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 failed...miserably. Looking at the event log, I noticed the following errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: MsiInstaller Event Category: None Event ID: 1008 Date: 2/8/2008 Time: 6:03:44 AM User: JJAMESON1\Administrator Computer: JJAMESON1 Description: The installation of C:\WINDOWS\Installer\49e8e21.msp is not permitted due to an error in software restriction policy processing.
