EXE ("executable") files, such as msmsgs.exe, are files that contain step-by-step instructions http://www.file.net/process/msmsgs.exe.html that a computer follows to carry out a function. When you "double-click" an EXE file, your computer automatically executes these instructions designed by a software developer (eg. Microsoft) to run a program (eg. MSDN Disc 2440) on your PC.Every software application on your PC uses an executable file - your web browser, word processor, spreadsheet program, etc. - making it one of the most useful kinds of files in the Windows operating system. Without http://www.solvusoft.com/en/files/error-virus-removal/exe/windows/microsoft/msdn-disc-2440/msmsgs-exe/ executable files like msmsgs.exe, you wouldn't be able to use any programs on your PC. Why Do I Have EXE Errors? Because of their usefulness and ubiquity, EXE files are commonly used as a method of delivery for virus / malware infection. Often, viruses will be disguised as a benign EXE file (such as msmsgs.exe) and distributed through SPAM email or malicious websites, which can then infect your computer when executed (eg. when you double-click the EXE file). In addition, viruses can infect, replace, or corrupt existing EXE files, which can then lead to error messages when MSDN Disc 2440 or related programs are executed. Thus, any executable files that you download to your PC should be scanned for viruses before opening - even if you think it is from a reputable source. When Do EXE Errors Occur? EXE errors, such as those associated with msmsgs.exe, most often occur during computer startup, program startup, or while trying to use a specific function in your program (eg. printing). I've gone into MSN Messnger and told it "do not start at Windows logon"; but msmsgs.exe keeps coming up. I've gone into MSCONFIG and unchecked msmsgs.exe from msmsgs.exe error on the Startup; but it keeps getting re-checked. I've gone into REGEDT32 and removed the entry but it keeps getting back in there. And ... if I am logged on to the general user, it comes back into Tasks within seconds of my Ending it via TaskMgr. Also, the Messenger Service is DISABLED. I've run SpyBot S&D, UltraWinCleaner, and Symantec A/V; and they have found no problems. There is something in my system that is preventing me from turning off msmsgs.exe ... what is it? I will completely uninstall MSN if that's what it takes; but the optimal solution is for me to somehow disable msmsgs.exe from the 'generic user' logon. Thanks in advance for any good assistance with this one... Thanks!!! The latter is a vestigial remnant, if you will, from earlier Windows versions that had it "for future use." From what I've read, XP doesn't even use it but it's there--and it's a potential backdoor to your OS, no less. Click here to download and activate a neat little program called ShootTheMessenger that shuts the backdoor.
