Thanks, maybe if you post it as an answer it will be helpful for others too. –Uchia Itachi Aug 29 '13 at 5:58 Just wanted to say that this bug isn't specific to git and on bad days cygwin will crash on any executable in the same way for no apparent reason. –meneldal Jun 9 '15 at 5:22 add a comment| 11 Answers 11 active oldest votes up vote 171 down vote accepted Cygwin uses persistent shared memory sections, which can on occasion become corrupted. stop; after 4 weeks of similar hell... I too was suffering from this problem, which started when I installed an additional 1gb of memory in my http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18502999/git-extensions-win32-error-487-couldnt-reserve-space-for-cygwins-heap-win32 laptop. Many "external" commands failed frequently, "make" rarely worked reliably, even "ls -rtl" occasionally stopped. I tried the "change the heap chunk size" following the recommended microsoft fix and had this had no change. I was seeing this (I've copied it in to make this solution easier to search for) : C:\cygwin\bin\make.exe (24556): *** https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2005-11/msg00413.html couldn't allocate cygwin heap, Win32 error 487, base 0x480000, top 0x48E000, reserve_size 57344, allocsize 57344, page_const 4096 84 [main] make 9072 fork_parent: child 24556 died waiting for longjmp before initialization make: vfork: No such file or directory I was reading about "setup" this morning (looking for a way to store the proxy name and password - which, btw, I still haven't found a solution to) when I reached this page: http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/setup-maxmem.html I tried it and, while 1024 didn't work for me, 2048 did! I did this: regtool -i set /HKLM/Software/Cygnus\ Solutions/Cygwin/heap_chunk_in_mb 2048 And not a single failure since. If I change it back to 1024 or delete it, I get the problem back. You have to restart bash etc...to pick this up. I hope this helps. Jerry Norbury Norbury Consulting b.v. Amsterdam Erick Hagstrom wrote: Hello all. I've seen quite a few messages in the archives along these lines but have been unable to make the problem stop.

It's become the most widely adopted version control system for software development. I use Cygwin for development issues. It's designed to assist developers migrating from Unix/Linux to the Microsoft Windows platform. It emulates the Unix-like command-line interface for Windows. Red Hat Software now maintains Cygwin, which is supported on all 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows from Windows 2003 Server onward. I had a problem using Cygwin with Git. Here's how I resolved it. Issue: “couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap, Win32 error 0" error message This issue can be one of the most frustrating things to experience when working with Git in Windows. I have encountered the issue multiple times and on multiple machines, even those with different repository setups. The only consistency was that I was using Cygwin. Here's the error that appears: [pl_codebox]git -c diff.mnemonicprefix=false -c core.quotepath=false commit -q -F E:\projects\g2g\git\rsa\rsaaj\AppData\Local\Temp\fabzds4r.4qo 0 [main] us 0 init_cheap: VirtualAlloc pointer is null, Win32 error 487 AllocationBase 0x0, BaseAddress 0x685700
