into the PC to copy some new music onto it, and got an "update firmware" message. This I did, but the ipod cannot be synced the required file cannot be found halfway through it said "Disk write error". Unplugging it I got the "folder structure screwed!" icon on the iPod. Resigned to losing all the music, I then reformatted its disk using Windows XP (perhaps http://forums.ilounge.com/ipod-classic-legacy-ipods/97279-help-please-firmware-update-failure-disk-write-error.html my mistake), and then used the "restore" function on the firmware updater. "Disk write error" again, and the same icon when unplugged. I know iPods have a bad reputation for disk failures, so I'm fairly sure it's dead, but I wonder if there's an outside chance of rescuing it? jjimm View Public Profile Find all posts by jjimm Advertisements #2 08-22-2006, 04:00 PM gotpasswords http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=385152 Charter Member Join Date: Mar 1999 Location: San Francisco area Posts: 15,987 Try Apple's iPod Restore process. This is a complete wipe of the little beastie's drive, and hopefully, that's all you'll need. This page has some more tips on making sure the computer itself is up to date and for finding corrupt music files. It's possible that your problem is a bad MP3, and the iPod itself is fine. The trick is finding it. gotpasswords View Public Profile Visit gotpasswords's homepage! One other "feature" I neglected to mention was that before I formatted it using XP, I looked at the drive using Windows and there were hundreds of files in the root of the drive, all with garbage names. jjimm View Public Profile Find all posts by jjimm #4 08-23-2006, 08:07 AM jjimm Guest Join Date: Jul 2001 Bump. jjimm View Public Profile Find all posts b

I have Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2. I've installed the iPod/iTunes software, including the recent update(11-15-04) from the iTunes website. iTunes does not recognize the iPod (does not show up on Source list)and when I try to restore (through USB) I get "Firmware Update Failure. Disk Write Error". I've tried it over and over again and it does not work. My computer also locks and is unable to safely eject the USB connection from time to time. Has anyone else had this problem Don't know what to do. Please help. Like 0 Reply You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. Posted by rjonesric on 4 Jan 2005 16:27 I experienced the same problem with my older Dell 4100 when attempting to connect to a USB2 card I installed some time ago. Apparently the USB2 communication is repeatedly interrupted, preventing the update from working. I was able to get my iPod to work by connecting it to an older USB1.1 port. Interestingly, I was able to connect an iPod to an older Dell with an add-on USB2 card with no problem. You might try installing a different USB2 card to see if it solves the problem.
